Consumer question:

We had our A/C system replaced last year. We had an Aprilaire filter system installed at the recommendation of the contractor. He said that the filters were Aprilaire 2120/2140 and a Humidifier Panel 400. What is your current replacement for these. I do not see them on any site selling your product.

Aprilaires' response:

The only humidifiers we can get are the cheap ones from the pharmasy that dont work or create white dust on all your furniture. I have a 300m2 home and I would love to humidify the whole home. I dont have any ducting, we have airconditioning which are split units. Can I install ducting for your product? I would like to have a controlled unit in each room. Summer's High Humidity Affects Indoor Air Quality

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team

Summer is almost here and with it we welcome the long-awaited warm weather but not the sticky, high levels of humidity that often come with it.  High humidity affects the quality of indoor air and can affect the health of you and your family in a variety of ways.

High humidity levels can cause mold, encourage dust mites which are a major cause of allergies, and cause a hot of problems in the home that can affect your physical health.  Visible signs of high humidity levels include condensation on windows, peeling wallpaper, damp patches on walls and ceilings, a musty smell and dampness.  But there are also numerous problems that go undetected because you can not see or smell them.

A few of the most common health effects of too much moisture in the home include the following:

Dust mites:  At least 10 percent of the population suffers from a dust mite allergy.  Half of American homes have enough bedding with enough dust mite allergen to cause allergies.. Of these homes, 24 percent had levels that were five times greater than the threshold to cause allergic reactions.

To control dust mites, experts recommend regular cleaning to reduce dust, as well as encasing mattresses, box springs and pillows in allergy-free cases.  The more dust-free the home, the less likely it will be able to support significant populations of allergen0causing dust mites.  Some of the symptoms associated with it include sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, nasal stuffiness, runny nose, stuffy ears, respiratory problems, atopic dermatitis and asthma.

Bacteria: you can't see or feel bacteria but they live on countertops, table surfaces, carpet, pillows, mattresses and just about anywhere people are.  Bacteria also grow profusely when there is plenty of moisture present.

Formaldehyde: When humidity levels are high, products such as furniture, cabinets, building materials and even some latex paints then to release formaldehyde into the air at a faster rate.  Studies have suggested that people exposed to formaldehyde levels ranging from 50 to 100 parts per billion for long periods of time are more likely to experience asthma-related respiratory symptoms, such as coughing and wheezing.

If you suspect that the air in your home is too moist, be sure to vent the areas that create moisture, like the show or bathroom.  You may also consider a whole home dehumidifier like the Aprilaire Model 1710A, 1730A,1750A or the 1770A.  The Aprilaire dehumidifiers can work independently or in tandem with the heating and cooling systems to remove extra moisture from your home.  A system like this will allow homeowners to achieve the EPA recommended humidity levels in the house of 30-50 percent.

What Everybody Ought to Know About Whole Home Air Cleaners - they are Proven to Protect and Even Improve Health

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team

The air in American homes is increasingly contaminated and polluted, and now studies have linked poor indoor air quality to the dramatic rise in not only allergy and asthma symptoms, but also a variety of other health issues, including heart disease, stroke and blood clots.

Studies are emerging that prove poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to a variety of symptoms and medical issues.  While individuals with pre-existing medical problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and allergies are at most risk from poor indoor quality, the medical literature demonstrates that even those in a good state of health are negatively affected.

The latest study conducted by scientists from Denmark and Sweden, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, reveals that poor indoor air adversely affects the performance of blood vessels in humans leading to cardiovascular disease.  The study also found that indoor air filtration greatly reduced the amount of ultrafine, fine and coarse air particles in the homes tested, which was associated with an actual improvement in the microvascular function of the study participants.

In an effort to protect public health and combat airborne invaders, Aprilaire, a leading manufacturer of indoor air quality products, is urging consumers nationwide to consider whole-home air cleaners as part of a modern and integrated approach to managing their indoor environments. Homeowners can be sure that a whole-home air cleaner works to permanently trap the airborne contaminants that most affect health and aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms, moving clean and comfortable air throughout every room of the home, all while operating silently and out of sight.

While the medical community acknowledges the benefits of clean air in the home, consumers often find themselves disappointed with the options available at local home improvement centers where portable, do-it-yourself air cleaning units are sold.

“We know through research that most people buy portable air cleaners to help alleviate some sort of respiratory issue, this cannot be accomplished with one portable air cleaner for an entire home,” said Mike Rimrodt, marketing director for Aprilaire. “In fact, most homes require four or five portable units or more too clean the air throughout the entire home and still don’t do as good a job,” notes Rimrodt. “When comparing performance, installation and maintenance factors, and overall cost, a whole-home air cleaning solution is ideal for families who want to ensure healthy, clean air in every room and get the best value for their dollar.”

Whole-home air cleaners permanently trap the airborne contaminants that can aggravate health and allergy and asthma symptoms. In a recent standard industry test, the Aprilaire 5000 achieved 99 percent efficiency against airborne particles. The unit captures and kills virtually all contaminants including those that most affect personal health—viruses, bacteria, spores and allergens 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Aprilaire also offers homeowners a one-of-a-kind air cleaner control that allows them to actively clean the air in their entire home based on personal preference and event triggers. A simple-to-program thermostat features Event-Based ™ Air Cleaning:

  • Constant Cleaning:  air cleaner is active for 24 hours a day seven days a week
  • Automatic:  air cleaner will run a minimum of 30 minutes per hour
  • Event Clean:  air cleaners will run for three hours continuously and then turn off
  • Allergies:  air cleaner will run continuously for 24 hours and then turn off

Event-Based Air Cleaning also provides other conveniences such as indicators that air cleaning is taking place as well maintenance reminders.

Aprilaire Periodic Preventative Humidifier Maintenance

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team

Periodic Preventative Maintenance

  • NOTE: Periodic inspection and preventive maintenance of your total heating system is important for efficient and safe operation. Your heating contractor should include humidifier service at the same time. All models are equipped with an in-line water strainer and orifice as shown below. These parts should be inspected and cleaned periodically to assure continued proper unit performance.

Aprilaire Humidifier Recommended Annual Maintenance

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team

Recommended Annual Maintenance

  • The water panel should be changed once a year, with a few exceptions.
    • The model 400 has a panel that should be changed twice a season
    • If extremely hard water is used in any Aprilaire humidifier, the panel should be changed more frequently than once a season.
    • The water panel cannot be cleaned because it has a special coating that helps the water adhere to the panel while the air is passing through it.  Without the coating, more water will go down the drain and less will be converted into a vapor.
  • Drain line
    • Detach the drain line from the drain spud at the bottom of the unit.
    • Bend it at the various points to loosen calcium deposits which may have formed on the inside of the line, and flush it with pressurized water.
    • You can also pour bleach through it prior to the water.  This will kill any micro-organisms that happen to be living in the drain line.
    • The drain line can be replaced should it prove difficult to clean.
  • Feed tube
    • Detach the tube from the nozzle at the top of the unit, and unscrew the end of the solenoid valve at the other end of the feed tube.
    • Run high pressure water through the tube and replace.
    • When reconnecting the feed tube, remember to double wrench the connections to prevent leaking.
  • Inside of unit
    • Look for any mineral deposits on the Scale Control Insert after removing the water panel, and get rid of them by wiping the insert with a damp towel or rag.  They should come right off.
    • If there are deposits on the inside of the cover, or in the case of a 700, on the fan blade, it may be indicative of a larger problem known as entrainment.  ()
    • Do not remove granulated coating on the distribution tray – not an issue with the new ones.
      • The granular coating is there to break up the surface tension of the water.  This allows water to flow evenly through all of the openings in the water distribution tray.
      • The newer trays have a fabric along the bottom of the tray which does the same thing as the granular coating.  The difference is the customer doesn’t have to worry about scraping off the fabric.
  • Hard or Soft Water
    • Aprilaire offers total flexibility in the installation of our humidifiers in that they will operate properly with either hard or soft water. Connecting to hard water may leave mineral deposits on the water panel that are scaly and hard in nature. Connecting to soft water may leave mineral deposits that are fluffier in nature. The bottom line is the water panel will typically last a full heating season using either type of water.  When extremely hard water is used in the humidifier, maintenance should be performed approximately every six months.

Aprilaire model 1700 Dehumidifier, new drain line?

Monday, March 26, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Our drain line is leaking and a replacement line is to be installed. I have purchased a braided vinyl hose thinking it would be more durable in an attic. Internal diameter of hose is 1/2 inch, and out diameter is 3/4 inch. Will this fit the Aprilaire 1700? Thank you for the information.

Aprilaires' respone:

Thank you for your question regarding the Aprilaire model 1700 dehumidifier.

You dehumidifier should have a fitting attache to the end of the PVC drain pipe to allow for connecting your 1/2 inch braided drain hose. We recommend that a consistent downward slope to the drain be ensured to prevent water from remaining in the hose, once the unit has shut off. The drain hose should be inspected for cracking every year to prevent leaks and associated water damage.

Thank you for choosing Aprilaire in your home comfort system.

What Aprilaire unit should I use to replace my old 110 humidiifer?

Thursday, March 8, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

The 110 does not seem to perform as it should any longer and may need to replace it. What is a replacement that will fit the 110 opening on the furnace

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding the replacement for your model 110. From an operational standpoint the model 700 would be the replacement for your 110. However, due to size differences there would be some resizing of the opening on your duct work.

Additionally, we recommend the installation be done by a licensed HVAC contractor. When installed by a licensed contractor, the units come with a 5 year warranty beginning on the date of installation. If you choose not to use a licensed contractor you risk voiding the 5 year warranty.

UV lights? Okay with my Aprilaire?

Friday, March 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Will the aprilaire media's standup to UV lights? I know the honeywell's at one time would get holes in them within a few months. And if the aprilaire's are compatable how far away does the light need to be?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding our Aprilaire air cleaner filters. We do not recommend any exposure from UV light onto our filter media. Our filters are made of acrylic and polypropylene fibers that break down when exposed to UV light. This break down could lead to shortened filter life and lowered efficiency.

If you have any further questions regarding this or any of our products, please feel free to contact our customer service department at your earliest convenience.

Love my Aprilaire Steam Humidifier but can you help me with the banging, please!

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I had the Aprrilaire Model 800 Steam Humidifier unit installed a little over a year ago. I am very happy with the unit except for the water valve. When it closes it makes a water hammer sound that can be heard 2 floors up from the unit. My next door neighbor complains about the same banging noise. Thank you!

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your model 800 humidifier. If you are experiencing water hammer with the solenoid, you can most times remedy this with the installation of a shock arrestor. The shock arrestor gives the pressure behind the water a place to go without banging the water against the valve.

We have a shock arrestor available, which is our part number 4280. Please contact your installing contractor regarding having a shock arrestor installed.

If you have any further questions regarding this or any of our products, please feel free to contact our customer service department at your earliest convenience.

I like humming but I don't like my humidifier humming, please help!

Friday, February 10, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

We have an Aprilaire model 550 Humidifier attached to our Central Air/Heat House system (also attached is a Aprilaire 2400 Air Cleaner). Both have worked smoothly until a couple of days ago. Water used to drain periodically into a corner sink like it was supposed to but now no water is draining whatsoever, and the humidifier makes a noise every once in a while like a little brief hum as if it is trying to run but cannot. I know the Water panel needs to be replaced, and I was wondering if this could be the cause of the problem or if it is something more serious. I would appreciate any insight you can give me. (if it matters, the humidifier is set to 35%, as is recommended for the current temperature.) Also, I tried to find the test/reset switch to test the humidifier, but could not find it on the unit. Any idea where it is typically located on this model?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your model 550 humidifier. If there is no water coming from the unit when the furnace is on and the control is making a call for humidity, then the solenoid valve is not opening. Since you are hearing an occasional hum from the humidifier, it sounds like the solenoid is trying to open but cannot. The condition of the water panel would have no bearing on the solenoid's ability to open. In this case we would recommend contacting your contractor to schedule a service call for your humidifier.

Additionally, to better understand why your unit is not operating, you have the option to call our technical support department at 1-800-334-6011 to troubleshoot the unit with one of our technicians over the phone. The technician may be able to diagnose what the problem is and point you in the right direction regarding service.

Our tech support department is available Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm CST.

What does the Heating icon on my Aprilaire thermostat model 8363 mean?

Thursday, February 9, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Owner's Manual of my Aprilaire model 8363 thermostat does not reference the "Heating" icon on display. The Safety and Installation Manual seems to imply that when "Heating" appears on screen, there may be a problem. System and t-stat appear to be ok. Problem or not?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting Aprilaire regarding your Aprilaire product.

The "heating" icon you reference is only an indication that the thermostat is attempting to turn on the heat. If this icon were to be flashing and there was no heat being produced, there may be a problem with the heating equipment, the furnace. Otherwise there is no problem.

Thinking I need a bigger humidifier...

Thursday, February 9, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

The furnace contractor installed the Aprilaire 500 humidifier for a home that is over 5500 sq ft. In reviewing the product information on your website it appears the contractor should have installed the 700 series. Am I correct in my assumption?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us with regards to your model 500 Humidifier. If this unit is the only source of humidification you have in your home, it will likely not be sufficient. While a 700 has 50% greater capacity, it is still only designed to handle 4200 sq ft. Our recommendation would be either to have two units in your home or one Model 800 steam humidifier. It can operate with any fan cycle of your furnace, not just the heat cycles, and humidify up to 24 hours/day. Please visit us online at www.aprilaire.com for more information on this model or any of our other product lines.

Second floor no drain but I WANT a humidifier...

Wednesday, December 21, 2011 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I am looking to instal a humidifier. I like your 400 series because my furnace is in a closet on the second floor that has no drain. But, I also have no access to the return because it is below the floorboard (plus limited space). I saw you make a self powered 700 series. Do you have a self powered drainless humidifier?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding our humidifers. Unfortunately we do not have a drainless powered humidifier.
One option you may want to consider is our model 800 steam humidifier. This unit could be installed in a room with a drain / cold water supply and then the steam hose can be extended up to 20' to enter the supply duct.
A link to information regarding our model 800 is included below:

Friday, December 16, 2011 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I have a 760 that needs to be replaced (for some reason).

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding the replacement for your model 760 humidifier. The replacement for the 760 is the model 700. We recommend having this replacement done by a licensed HVAC contractor. When the units are installed by a licensed contractor it comes with a 5 year warranty on all the parts. If you choose not to use a licensed contractor, you risk voiding our warranty.

Tankless water heater and humidifier automatic model can they dance?

Wednesday, December 14, 2011 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I got this new humidifier and also I replaced to a tankless water heater. I wanted to use the humidifier in automatic mode and connected it to the hot water pipe. Since the flow is so low, the heater doesn't kick in to warm the water. Condensation occurs on the plastic tube inside the humidifier and drips down on the floor. What are my options in using the humidifier as desired (auto mode)?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us with regards to your model 600A Humidifier. Automatic mode refers to how the humidifier uses outdoor temperature to recalculate your humidity set point. As temperature drops, humidity settings should be lowered to compensate. The danger of leaving the humidity set point high as outdoor temperature falls is that your windows could start to collect that excess moisture in the form of fog or frost.
It's not clear what you meant by condensation. In this application, liquid water is converted to vapor, but for that water to re-condense, it needs to come into contact with a very cold surface. There is a drain line coming from the humidifier, but that needs to be properly attached to a drainage system. There will be a constant trickle of water running out of the unit as it operates.
Please let us know if you have any further questions.

How does the Aprilaire model 400 measure humidity?

Monday, December 12, 2011 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

How does the 400M measure the Humidity in the return air vent.

Right now It will only work when the dial is set all the way 45o

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your model 400M humidifier. The manual control that comes with the 400M contains a membrane that expands and contracts depending on the amount of moisture in the air. It takes this measurement from the air that is surrounding the control, whether it is air from the duct or from the room the control is mounted in. If the control is turning the humidifier on at 45%, that means that the control is sensing the current relative humidity is between 40 and 45%. As the air in your home becomes drier, the humidifier will begin to run on a lower number.

If you have any further questions regarding this or any of our products, please feel free to contact our customer service department at your earliest convenience.

My Aprilaire Humidifier fails to feed water when the furnace is running..

Friday, December 9, 2011 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Unit was installed in February 2011. fails to feed water when the furnace is running.....even on the highest #7 setting. Worked fine last heating season

When the dial is moved to the "Test" setting, the water will flow and the 'reset light' will blink like it's supposed to....but when moved back regular run mode - even on # 5, #6 or #7 - it will not put water into the filter pan.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your 600A humidifier. Our controls have a built in design condition that allows the control to make a maximum of 45% relative humidity. If the digital screen has a value of 45% or above, the control will not turn on the humidifier outside of test. Also, the control has a accuracy differential of +/- 5%. So even if the screen reads 40%, due to this differential it may not turn the humidifier on.

Once the air in your home drops below 40-45% relative humidity your humidifier will turn on to add moisture to the air.

If you have any further questions regarding this or any of our products, please feel free to contact our customer service department at your earliest convenience.

How much will it cost to run the Model 800 Steam humidifier?

Monday, December 5, 2011 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

How much will it cost to run the 800 each month, approximately?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding the model 800 steam humidifier. At 120 volts, the 800 could cost about 10 cents per hour to operate. The run time of the humidifier will vary on several conditions like humidity set point, thightness of home, and square footage of home to name a few. If the 800 were to run for 12 hours out of a 24 hour period it would cost about $1.20 per day or $36 per month. However, it is unlikely it will run 12 hours out of every 24 hour period and may be much less per month then the amount above.
