Excess Humidity: Issues, Problems, Solutions

Hello, and welcome to my blog!  My name is Matthew Gotto, and I am the Product Marketing Manager for dehumidification and ventilation products for Aprilaire.  Before I started here at Aprilaire, I knew very little about the quality of the air inside my home, but more importantly, I had no real idea on how to control it for the health of my family and home.  I guess you could say I was like everyone else, kind of “in the dark” on the whole thing.  My family and I just moved into a new Energy-Star, Green-Built home.  Knowing what I now know about how high humidity levels can affect your family’s health as well as the sustainability of your home, having the right solution to reduce and control excess humidity is essential.  Being that my new home is so efficient and "tight", I can more easily see first-hand how high humidity inside my home affects my family, especially having family members that are allergy sufferers. The goal of my blog is to help you identify humidity issues and problems that may exist in your home today, and how we can help you identify options and/or solutions to take care of them.

I have a 30 yr. old house and have darkening on the ceiling and some walls. I have repeatedly used Kilz before painting. One contractor said it was because insulation added 15 years ago was covering the vents another contractor said the insullation was NOT covering the vents and thought it was due to too much moisture in my house (I do have an Aprilaire humidifier on my furnace) and setting my thermostat a too much of a temperature difference (56 during the day in winter while I'm gone and 67 in the p.m. when I'm home). How can I tell if I have a mold problem?
