My model 400 Aprilaire humidifier is not running in normal conditions, suggestions?

Wednesday, May 23, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Water flows and humidifier on light comes on only in reset mode but humidifier does not come on and activate water flow in normal mode. I have turned dial to max humidity but still does not activate water flow when furnace comes on. I am running in automatic mode with wiring installed per installation manual. I have the outdoor sensor installed but not run outside yet. Please advise. Thank you

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your model 400 Aprilaire humidifier. If the outdoor sensor is in an area where the temperature is above 60F the humidifier will only run in the test mode. You may confirm this by moving the manual/auto switch to the manual position. This will allow the control to work off the manual sensor on the control rather than the outdoor sensor.

I have manual control for my whole house humidifier. I've been noticing water on the windows in the morning.

Saturday, May 12, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I have manual control for my whole house humidifier. I've been noticing water on the windows in the morning. When I look at the humidistat it is set for 32% (doesn't say RH but thats what I assume). I got another Aprilaire humistat that just measures RH and put it on top of my existing control. Where the existing control indicates about 32%(5% hysterisis) the standalone unit indicates 44%RH. How do I know which is correct and what do I do if my existing manual control is wrong? IS there a way to clean or calibrate it?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your Aprilaire humidistat. If you turn the dial from left to right you should hear two clicks. The actual humidity in your home will be the area between the two clicks. For example, if the humidistat clicks at 30% and 36% your actual humidity would be 33%. There is not a way to calibrate the humidistat. It is unclear from your email if the original humidistat is an Aprilaire humidistat, so it is difficult to say if it is out of spec. The accuracy of our Aprilaire manual humidistats are +/- 5%

The moisture on your windows is due to the surface temperature of your windows reaching dew point. This occurs when there is more humidity in the home than what the home can hold based on the current outdoor temperature. As the temperature outside drops you want less humidity in your home. For example when the outdoor temperature is 20F or above we recommend 35% humidity at a room temperature of 70F. If the outdoor temperature drops to 0F you'll want 25%.

What is the minimum water temperature to supply an Aprilaire 350 humidifier?

Tuesday, May 8, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

What's the minimum water temperature needed to supply this Aprilaire model 350 humidifier unit? We want to reduce the water temp for the summer so it doesn't heat the house while it runs. Here in Denver we still need the moisture all year around.

By the way, do you make a in-the wall ultrasonic unit with a humidistat, that can run from filtered water that removes minerals and chlorine?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your model 350 Aprilaire humidifier. The minimum water temperature for our self contained humidifiers is 140F. This is required in order for the evaporation process to take place. When the hot water flows over the water panel, the water evaporates off the water panel and into the room temperature air moving through the water panel. Lowering the water temperature will reduce the amount of humidification produced. The water to the humidifier can be hard or softened but should not be from a reverse osmosis system. We do not manufacture ultrasonic humidifiers.

How can I tell the difference between the old aprilaire 400 series humidifiers?

Monday, May 7, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

How can I tell what model I have? (please add this question/answer to your FAS's).

My unit is probably at least 25 years old. I am having a problem with it (leaking water coming from unit's housing), and would like to understand which model I am dealing with.

I have a unit that is installed on ductwork associated with the furnace. The unit is drained by a flexible tube that goes into a pump (on the floor) that evacuates the excess water to a nearby sink. The unit uses warm water.

The rheostat/control is installed on ductwork as well, about 3-4 feet away from the unit. The Rheostat is a dark brown/black control knob, in the middle of a rectangular panel that is also dark brown/black. All the printing on the rheostat's panel (that was once a faint gold perhaps) is worn away, except the '25' at the top/middle of the dial, and - in the upper right- the lettering 'aire.'

Some pages from the original manual were pasted on the inside of a cabinet door in the basement by a previous owner (until today I had not known what they were for.). The instructions say that the Summer Shut-off instructions are to turn the dial to 25. I was unable to find a manual on your website that contains those instructions.

However, from the pictures in http://www.aprilaire.com/themes/aa/en/manuals/Humidifiers_Owners_Manual.pdf, it appears like the models shown on pages 13 and 14 (Models 440, 445-448).

How can I tell which model it is? thank you.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your Aprilaire humidifier.
The following is the best way to tell the difference between the model 440 and the model 445-448. The 445-448 will have a thumb screw on the bottom of the Humidifier to hold on the reservoir. The 440 does not have a thumb screw because it does not have a reservoir.
Turn your Humidistat knob clockwise until it stops (to the off position) to turn your Humidifier off. You will have to set it to the desired percent when your humidity levels begin to decrease.

Hi there, I live in South Africa and in winter the humidity levels can drop to 9%. The only humidifiers we can get are the cheap ones from the pharmasy that dont work or create white dust on all your furniture. I have a 300m2 home and I would love to humidify the whole home. I dont have any ducting, we have airconditioning which are split units. Can I install ducting for your product? I would like to have a controlled unit in each room. Also please let me know if your products are available in South Africa, if not can we purchase online and ship to SA.

I need humidity in the Summer, what should I do?

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

My heating/air cool unit is now controlled by a new thermostat that allows fan circulation about 35% of the time whether the heat or cooling is running or not. Will the humidifier work when the fan is on whether it is on heating or cooling? I live in an area which humidity averages about 12% during the summer. I need to add humidity during those times.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for that very good question regarding the Aprilaire humidifier operation.

The answer to your question depends on the type of humidity control that was installed with the humidifier. In the event that the humidity control was the type that used an outdoor temperature sensor to regulate the humidity, then the humidifier would not add humidity in the summer months. this type of control would disable the humidifier when the outdoor temperature would go above 60 degrees. If the humidity control does not use the outdoor temperature sensor, then you may be able to humidify during the summer months. Just be aware that the air conditioning system will remove some humidity during its normal operation; which would take longer to bring the humidity level up.

Summer time use of my Aprilaire Humidifier Model 700?

Tuesday, April 24, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I recently moved into home that has Aprilaire Automatic Humidifier Model number 700. My question is during the Summer time when I switch the heat off and turn on the A/C at the thermostat. Will the Humidifier stay off or do I need to somehow turn the unit off?

Aprilaire response:

Thank you for contacting Aprilaire.

To live in Indiana, the humidifier would typically not bother to come on during summer, as nature gives us more humidity than we need. Any time the level of humidity is higher than the selected level, (or max of 45%) the humidifier will not come on.

Some people, just to make sure, will go ahead and turn down the humidistat to 'off' or at least the lowest setting. Then, for the same reasons as listed above, the humidifier will not come on.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Summer's High Humidity Affects Indoor Air Quality

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team

Summer is almost here and with it we welcome the long-awaited warm weather but not the sticky, high levels of humidity that often come with it.  High humidity affects the quality of indoor air and can affect the health of you and your family in a variety of ways.

High humidity levels can cause mold, encourage dust mites which are a major cause of allergies, and cause a hot of problems in the home that can affect your physical health.  Visible signs of high humidity levels include condensation on windows, peeling wallpaper, damp patches on walls and ceilings, a musty smell and dampness.  But there are also numerous problems that go undetected because you can not see or smell them.

A few of the most common health effects of too much moisture in the home include the following:

Dust mites:  At least 10 percent of the population suffers from a dust mite allergy.  Half of American homes have enough bedding with enough dust mite allergen to cause allergies.. Of these homes, 24 percent had levels that were five times greater than the threshold to cause allergic reactions.

To control dust mites, experts recommend regular cleaning to reduce dust, as well as encasing mattresses, box springs and pillows in allergy-free cases.  The more dust-free the home, the less likely it will be able to support significant populations of allergen0causing dust mites.  Some of the symptoms associated with it include sneezing, itchy, watery eyes, nasal stuffiness, runny nose, stuffy ears, respiratory problems, atopic dermatitis and asthma.

Bacteria: you can't see or feel bacteria but they live on countertops, table surfaces, carpet, pillows, mattresses and just about anywhere people are.  Bacteria also grow profusely when there is plenty of moisture present.

Formaldehyde: When humidity levels are high, products such as furniture, cabinets, building materials and even some latex paints then to release formaldehyde into the air at a faster rate.  Studies have suggested that people exposed to formaldehyde levels ranging from 50 to 100 parts per billion for long periods of time are more likely to experience asthma-related respiratory symptoms, such as coughing and wheezing.

If you suspect that the air in your home is too moist, be sure to vent the areas that create moisture, like the show or bathroom.  You may also consider a whole home dehumidifier like the Aprilaire Model 1710A, 1730A,1750A or the 1770A.  The Aprilaire dehumidifiers can work independently or in tandem with the heating and cooling systems to remove extra moisture from your home.  A system like this will allow homeowners to achieve the EPA recommended humidity levels in the house of 30-50 percent.

What Everybody Ought to Know About Whole Home Air Cleaners - they are Proven to Protect and Even Improve Health

Monday, April 2, 2012 by Aprilaire Team

The air in American homes is increasingly contaminated and polluted, and now studies have linked poor indoor air quality to the dramatic rise in not only allergy and asthma symptoms, but also a variety of other health issues, including heart disease, stroke and blood clots.

Studies are emerging that prove poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to a variety of symptoms and medical issues.  While individuals with pre-existing medical problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and allergies are at most risk from poor indoor quality, the medical literature demonstrates that even those in a good state of health are negatively affected.

The latest study conducted by scientists from Denmark and Sweden, published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, reveals that poor indoor air adversely affects the performance of blood vessels in humans leading to cardiovascular disease.  The study also found that indoor air filtration greatly reduced the amount of ultrafine, fine and coarse air particles in the homes tested, which was associated with an actual improvement in the microvascular function of the study participants.

In an effort to protect public health and combat airborne invaders, Aprilaire, a leading manufacturer of indoor air quality products, is urging consumers nationwide to consider whole-home air cleaners as part of a modern and integrated approach to managing their indoor environments. Homeowners can be sure that a whole-home air cleaner works to permanently trap the airborne contaminants that most affect health and aggravate allergy and asthma symptoms, moving clean and comfortable air throughout every room of the home, all while operating silently and out of sight.

While the medical community acknowledges the benefits of clean air in the home, consumers often find themselves disappointed with the options available at local home improvement centers where portable, do-it-yourself air cleaning units are sold.

“We know through research that most people buy portable air cleaners to help alleviate some sort of respiratory issue, this cannot be accomplished with one portable air cleaner for an entire home,” said Mike Rimrodt, marketing director for Aprilaire. “In fact, most homes require four or five portable units or more too clean the air throughout the entire home and still don’t do as good a job,” notes Rimrodt. “When comparing performance, installation and maintenance factors, and overall cost, a whole-home air cleaning solution is ideal for families who want to ensure healthy, clean air in every room and get the best value for their dollar.”

Whole-home air cleaners permanently trap the airborne contaminants that can aggravate health and allergy and asthma symptoms. In a recent standard industry test, the Aprilaire 5000 achieved 99 percent efficiency against airborne particles. The unit captures and kills virtually all contaminants including those that most affect personal health—viruses, bacteria, spores and allergens 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

Aprilaire also offers homeowners a one-of-a-kind air cleaner control that allows them to actively clean the air in their entire home based on personal preference and event triggers. A simple-to-program thermostat features Event-Based ™ Air Cleaning:

  • Constant Cleaning:  air cleaner is active for 24 hours a day seven days a week
  • Automatic:  air cleaner will run a minimum of 30 minutes per hour
  • Event Clean:  air cleaners will run for three hours continuously and then turn off
  • Allergies:  air cleaner will run continuously for 24 hours and then turn off

Event-Based Air Cleaning also provides other conveniences such as indicators that air cleaning is taking place as well maintenance reminders.

Aprilaire model 1700 Dehumidifier, new drain line?

Monday, March 26, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Our drain line is leaking and a replacement line is to be installed. I have purchased a braided vinyl hose thinking it would be more durable in an attic. Internal diameter of hose is 1/2 inch, and out diameter is 3/4 inch. Will this fit the Aprilaire 1700? Thank you for the information.

Aprilaires' respone:

Thank you for your question regarding the Aprilaire model 1700 dehumidifier.

You dehumidifier should have a fitting attache to the end of the PVC drain pipe to allow for connecting your 1/2 inch braided drain hose. We recommend that a consistent downward slope to the drain be ensured to prevent water from remaining in the hose, once the unit has shut off. The drain hose should be inspected for cracking every year to prevent leaks and associated water damage.

Thank you for choosing Aprilaire in your home comfort system.

What humidifier is right for my 1500 sq ft house in Alaska?

Tuesday, March 13, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer questioni:

I have a 1500 sq. ft. house in Alaska. Very dry in the winter. We have a forced air furnace and a HRV system. Also have hard wood floors that currently are shrinking due to RH in the home of 32%. What humidifier do you recommend to meet our needs?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us with regards to our Aprilaire Humidifiers. Based on the information provided, we could recommend any of our units. Other factors to consider are the age of the home and its relative tightness. The presence of an HRV system must also be taken into consideration. These systems typically provide a constant stream of fresh (and dry) air to your home. HRVs can actually work against your humidification needs by removing humidity already inside the home. You may want to weigh the benefits of the HRV operating during your humidifying season versus meeting your humidifying needs. We would recommend that you contact your local HVAC installer to have them visit your site and provide you with an assessment of your humidity needs and what Aprilaire humidifier would best meet them.

Can an in-line fan be added to my Aprilaire humidifier?

Wednesday, February 29, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Can I add an in-line fan to the humidifier bypass duct in order to increase the humidity?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us with regards to our model 400 Humidifier. This humidifier requires between 60-100 CFM to operate properly. If the air provided to the humidifier is lower than 60 CFM, an in-line fan may help increase the humidification rate, but it should only run with the furnace. As a drainless model, it does not humidify well without a source of heat to evaporate the water.

When using the Aprilaire non digital control on my humidifier are there any other adjustments? Or any other suggestions?

Monday, February 13, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I do not have a Digital Control for my humidifier. In order for the humidifier to turn On, I need to set the knob control to 35%. Are there any other adjustments? Or any other suggestions?

Aprilaire's response:

Thank you for contacting us with regards to your model 560 Humidifier. For all humidifiers and their controls, the humidifier can only activate when the control is set to a level higher than your current humidity. If your system needs to be set higher than 35% to operate, that suggests that your indoor humidity is at or below 35%. Our recommendation is to set the control at a level according to the owner's manual. If your outdoor temperature is 40°F or warmer, set it to 45%. For every 10°F colder outside, set the control lower by 5%. Please see the attached document for more information on Low Humidity issues.

Why 20% RH when it is 0 degrees outside?

Saturday, February 11, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

Why do you use 20 degree relative humidity when outside temperature is around zero? At that level lips crack, nose bleeds, lips crack and dry throat causes coughs. Wood carvings also crack. So while the control panel tells us to set at 20, we are using 40.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your model 700M Aprilaire humidifier. We designed our humidifiers to maintain an indoor relative humidity of 35% anytime the outdoor temperature is 20F or above. The actual amount of humidity a specific home can hold varies. Some homes may be able to hold more humidity than 35% at 20F outdoor temperature. If you are able to maintain 40% humidity without seeing condensation on your windows you may continue to set your control to 40%. Our concern is if you try and maintain too high of a humidity level, the result is damage to your home. The guide lines in our owners manul are to reduce the opportunity for damage to your home while keeping the home comfortable. This is why we recommend maintaining an indoor relative humidity of 25% anytime the outdoor temperature is 0F. As the outdoor temperature drops the indoor air can hold less humidity, so we advise to reduce te humidity set point.

Model 800 has 3 sets of capacity, which one is right for me?

Saturday, February 11, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

My house is 6000sq ft. What capacity should my Aprilaire model 800 humidifier unit be set to, 11.5,20.5,or 23.3 gallons per day? Also how do I know what its set at now? I cant seem to get it about 37% humidity. I have a digital new thermostat.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your model 800 Aprilaire steam humidifier. Your model 800 can work with a 110, 208 or 240 volt power supply. The higher the voltage, the higher the gallons per day output. A power supply of 240 will produce 23.3 gallons per day. A home of 6000 sq. ft with 8" ceilings would typical need 23- 25 gallons per day. Your HVAC installer would know how they sized your home for humidification and what power supply they used. As long as your thermostat has dry contacts, it may be used to control humidification from your model 800. We ask for you to please contact them to discuss how they have wired your system.

I like humming but I don't like my humidifier humming, please help!

Friday, February 10, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

We have an Aprilaire model 550 Humidifier attached to our Central Air/Heat House system (also attached is a Aprilaire 2400 Air Cleaner). Both have worked smoothly until a couple of days ago. Water used to drain periodically into a corner sink like it was supposed to but now no water is draining whatsoever, and the humidifier makes a noise every once in a while like a little brief hum as if it is trying to run but cannot. I know the Water panel needs to be replaced, and I was wondering if this could be the cause of the problem or if it is something more serious. I would appreciate any insight you can give me. (if it matters, the humidifier is set to 35%, as is recommended for the current temperature.) Also, I tried to find the test/reset switch to test the humidifier, but could not find it on the unit. Any idea where it is typically located on this model?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your model 550 humidifier. If there is no water coming from the unit when the furnace is on and the control is making a call for humidity, then the solenoid valve is not opening. Since you are hearing an occasional hum from the humidifier, it sounds like the solenoid is trying to open but cannot. The condition of the water panel would have no bearing on the solenoid's ability to open. In this case we would recommend contacting your contractor to schedule a service call for your humidifier.

Additionally, to better understand why your unit is not operating, you have the option to call our technical support department at 1-800-334-6011 to troubleshoot the unit with one of our technicians over the phone. The technician may be able to diagnose what the problem is and point you in the right direction regarding service.

Our tech support department is available Monday through Friday, 7 am to 5 pm CST.

If you have any further questions regarding this or any of our products, please feel free to contact our customer service department at your earliest convenience.

My humidifier is very chatty well really just chatering.

Thursday, February 9, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

My 700M makes a chatering noise when the humidity control is moved and when the humidity changes. I think it is coming from the water selenoid, but I can not be sure.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us. The problem that you are experiencing has occurred with other customers that were having issues in getting the proper power to the humidifier to allow the humidifier turn on. Basically what is happening is that the solenoid is not getting the full 24 volts and 10 volt amps required to open properly. Depending on which generation of 700 humidifier you have and what is wired to the humidifier between the humidistat and humidifier would determine what the correct trouble shooting step that I would suggest at this point. If you could advise the color of the unit and what is wired between the humidistat and humidifier, I would then be able to give you a better direction in trouble shooting the humidifier. This may be easier if you called us with your response at 800-334-6011. You may still need to have an installing contractor to trouble shoot the humidifier further. I look forward to your response. If you have any other questions please contact us at 800-334-6011.

My Aprilaire is putting out to much humidity, so I lowered my controller...

Friday, January 20, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:
My humidifier was set at 7 and put too much condensation on my windows so I turned it down to 4. The condensationis just minimal now, so that's good, but the numbers don't match. When it\'s set to 4, my readings upstairs shows 36%. I thought setting 4 was 25% to 30%. Also, ideally I would like the humidity in the 40s. Is there something wrong with the settings? Is the 700 model too large for my 1500sf townhome? Its the one my hvac guy installed with new furnace. Any help you can give is appreciated. Thank you.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us. The setting 4 should equate to approximately 30%. Is the control mounted on the return? If so this might explain the different readings. The 700 has a large evaporative capacity however if you install a unit with excess capacity it usually just runs less.

What Aprilaire humidifiers work with horizontal heating systems?

Wednesday, January 18, 2012 by Aprilaire Team
Consumer question:

I just had to return a Model 700 because I have an attic hvac unit that is horizontal. We live in the desert in St. George, UT and have a 1,450 sf house that is 8 years old. What unit would you recommend for our horizontal attic unit?

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for your email regarding your interest in our Aprilaire humidifiers. The only model that will not work on a horizontal heating system is the model 700. The humidity level is reduced by 50%. We wold recommend the mode 600 for your application.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be of service
