Consumer question:

How many gals of water does this unit (model 500A Aprilaire humidifier) consume or use daily.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding the model 500M humidifier. The water usage of the unit will vary depending upon how much or how often it runs. The feed rate of water going into the unit is 3 gallons per hour. Typically the unit will not run 24 hours a day so it won't actually consume 144 gallons in a day.

When water is fed into the unit, a portion of the water is held by the water panel to be evaporated and absorbed as relative humidity. Water not evaporated will flush most mineral deposits down the drain. With this feature, the service life of the water panel and the humidifier itself is extended.

To understand how little water your humidifier actually uses, if your humidifier were to operate for one hour (typical humidifier operating time is approximately four hours over a 24 hour period), the amount of water drained would be less than that used with one flush of your toilet.

If you have any further questions regarding this or any of our products, please feel free to contact our customer service department at your earliest convenience.

Perhaps if I gave you a little more information you could narrow down or or give us without imagination answers, no disrespect intended the water usage of the 500. Our house is 1000sqft, the windows are about 5 years old and vinyl frame with insulated glass the furnace is 98%or 96% efficient and about 5 years old. "the house is considered by DTE to be the most energy efficient in its size and location" The house is kept at 68 degrees for 15 hours a day and at 60 degrees for 9 hours per day at about 43% humidity round the clock as best we can. Given these parameters could you help me narrow water usage of the 500

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the water usage of your model 500 Aprilaire humidifier. The water feed rate to the model 500 is 3 gallons per hour(GPH) of which .50GPH is evaporated into the air. The remaining 2.50GPH is used to flushing way the mineral deposits left behind from the evaporation process. The age, tightness, size of the home as well as the humidification level your are trying to attain, will affect how much water is actually used. While the approximate runtime may be around 6 hours a day, there are numerous factors(listed previously) which will affect the actual water usage. If your model 500 ran for 6 hours a day, your model 500 would use 18 gallons of water. We are unable to provide the actual water usage, without knowing the exact amount of time your model 500 is running,
