Could it be water hammer?

Consumer question:

When the solenoid opens on my Aprilaire Model 600 the unit makes a loud hammer sound as if opening to hard. I've ready about possible water hammer but do no think this is the case. Your thoughts appreciated.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for allowing Aprilaire to help you in this matter.
In most cases the water supply tubing can cause this type of "hammering" sound. If your dealer installed copper tubing to your humidifier you may want to check the routing of the tubing; if it is touching or supported on any sheet metal ductwork, or if the tubing is laying across any hard material for support and there is no insulation material between the tubing and support. If the water supply tubing is plastic ensure that the tubing is firmly anchored an does not have the ability to sway and make contact with ductwork.
If the water supply tubing is isolated from all metal and support contacts it may be possible that the solenoid valve may have weak internal spring allowing it to "hit bottom" of the valve. If this were happening your heating contractor should replace the solenoid valve.
If there is any other information you think may be pertinent to the noise please let us know.
