On my Model 500M there is a dial on the front that says “Summer” and “Winter.” Should I turn that off or is the humidifier meant to stay on in the summer?

Consumer question:

I just had a Model 500M installed.  There is a dial on the front that says “Summer” and “Winter.”  The other control is on the back of the furnace (contains the “Off” position and levels).  Should I turn that off or is the humidifier meant to stay on in the summer?

Aprilaires response:

The humidifier control should be in the off position and the damper handle should be pointed to the summer position in the summer months.  The humidifier will not operate in the summer as long as the relative humidity level indoors is above 45% relative humidity and the heat is off.

Here is the owner's manual for your unit.  The summer shut down instructions are located on page 12.  Please contact our Customer Service Department if we may be of further assistance.  Our toll free number is 1-800-334-6011.

AC units are built to take humidity out of the air rather than put it in. It should remain off all summer.
