I currently have the Aprilaire model no. 401 replacement media (air cleaner model 2400) I saw your upgrade kit with a different model no. filter and wondered what the MERV rating was of each filter.

Consumer question:

I currently have the Aprilaire model no. 401 replacement media (air cleaner model 2400) I saw your upgrade kit with a different model no. filter and wondered what the MERV rating was of each filter. Also, I had read that increasing your filters MERV rating can reduce your system's airflow thus increasing your heating and cooling bills. Could you comment on this?

Aprilaires' response:

The current 401 media you're using has a MERV rating of 10.  The filter in the new upgrade kit has a MERV rating of 13.

The air flow in your system is measured by static pressure.  Yes the static pressure is a little bit higher when increasing the MERV rating, but then you are also increasing the amount of particles being removed from the air stream.  The upgrade kit filter may have a slight raise in the static pressure, it is able to remove about 65% more particles out of the air stream than that of the 401.

We recommend changing the new upgrade kit filter once every six months or once a year depending on the blower/fan operation of your heating and cooling system.  The 401 media filter we recommend changing out every year or every other year.
