Humidify Your Home to Eliminate Dry Air

Friday, June 12, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know...You can experience bothersome health issues if the air in your home is too dry.  According to the Mayo Clinic, as reported on, breathing dry air can irritate your nasal passages and throat, as well as make your skin dry and flaky.  It may also cause your lips to chap and your nose to bleed.

Steps to combat dry air
One of the steps the Mayo Clinic suggests to prevent dry air and all the ailments that come from it is to install a humidifier on your furnace.  Aprilaire is the name in whole-house humidification.  It installs on your HVAC system and provides soothing moisture throughout your entire home.  Unlike a bulky, noisy, portable humidifier that sits in your living space and requires you to fill its tank, Aprilaire works quietly in your mechanical room, out of sight and out of mind, with no tanks to fill.

Annual maintenance is a breeze as well; simply change out the water panel every year.  Call your local Aprilaire dealer today to prevent dry air in your home.

Control Your Humidity and Save $$$$

Friday, June 5, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know...There are four core benefits to proper levels of relative humidity (RH) in your home: health, comfort, protection and energy savings.  In recent blogs we've discussed health, comfort, and protection.  Let's wrap it up with energy savings today.

Adjust Your Thermostat and Save $$$$
Proper levels of humidification allow you to feel more comfortable at lower temperatures in the winter season.  Because of this, you can turn down your thermostat and save on your heating bill without having to put on that wool sweater.  In fact, you can save up to 3% on your energy bill for every one degree you lower your thermostat!  Call your Aprilaire dealer today to have your humidifier installed in time for the next heating season and save on next winter’s heating bill.

Likewise, with dehumidification, you can save money.  Do you know the old saying "it's not the heat, it's the humidity"?  Well, it's true.  Take out the humidity and you will feel more comfortable at high temperatures.  Install a whole-house dehumidifier and turn up your thermostat for savings!

Control Humidity to Protect Assets

Wednesday, June 3, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know....There are four core benefits to proper levels of relative humidity (RH) in your home: health, comfort, protection, and energy savings.  Last month we discussed health and comfort.  Let's examine protection today.

Protect Your Home and Valuable Possessions
Proper levels of humidity ensure the protection of your most valuable assets.  If your air is too dry, wood floors, trim, and cabinets crack and separate.  Home electronics such as computers, TVs, and stereos can be damaged from static electricity.  Drywall can crack and wallpaper can peel.

If your air is too humid, your home can suffer from bubbling and cracking paint, peeling wallpaper, mold and mildew growth, and swollen wood framing around doors and windows.

The solution to these issues is proper levels of humidification, which can be achieved by installing a whole-house humidifier or central dehumidifier from Aprilaire.  Aprilaire products work in conjunction with your HVAC system to provide the protection you need in every room of your house.  No portable unit can do that.

Proper Levels of Relative Humidity - The Key to Comfort

Thursday, May 21, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know....There are four core benefits to proper levels of relative humidity (RH) in your home:  health, comfort, protection and energy savings.  Earlier this week we discussed RH and its impact on health.  Let's examine comfort today.

Comfort Makes Your House a Home
Your home is your safe haven.  It is where you spend most of your time, so doesn't it make sense that it should also be the most comfortable place you know of?  Absolutely!  But is it?  Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do you feel hot and sticky at normal temperatures?
  • Do you find yourself over-cooling your house in an effort to dehumidify, only to find that you are now cold and clammy?
  • Do you have musty smelling rooms?
  • Do you get condensation on windows, mirrors, and even cold drinks?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, it's time to take control of your comfort.  Call your Aprilaire dealer today and install a whole-house dehumidifier.  It works in conjunction with your HVAC system to remove excess moisture, leaving every room perfectly conditioned for maximum comfort.  And, unlike a portable dehumidifier, it operates quietly in your equipment room, out of sight and out of mind, with no cumbersome tanks to empty and clean.

Proper Levels of Relative Humidity for Your Health's Sake

Wednesday, May 20, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know....There are four core benefits to proper levels of relative humidity (RH) in your home:  health, comfort, protection and energy savings.  While all four are important protecting the health of you and your family is the most critical of the four.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) has done extensive research to determine the ideal levels of RH to eliminate or reduce certain health ailments.  As you can see from the chart, air that has low levels of RH increases the occurrence of bacteria, viruses, respiratory infections, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and ozone production.  High levels of RH increase bacteria, viruses, fungi, mites, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and chemical interactions.

How do you ensure that you and your family are protected from these ailments?  A whole-house solution from Aprilaire is the answer.  Whether it's a humidifier to add soothing moisture in the winter months or a dehumidifier to remove excess humidity in the spring, summer and fall, Aprilaire has the products to solve your humidification needs.  And, unlike portable products, Aprilaire conditions your entire home, ensuring that every room in your house is at the proper level of humidification.

Measure Your Relative Humidity with Aprilaire 9960

Wednesday, May 13, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....The first step to fixing a problem is realizing that you have one.  Problems with proper levels of humidification are no different.  How many of you wonder if your home has proper humidity levels before actual problems start to surface?  Problems from air that is too dry include annoying shocks from static electricity, dry, itchy skin, irritated sinuses, sore throats, and more.

Problems that arise from too much humidity include mold and mildew in your home, increased allergy and asthma symptoms, not to mention fungi and mites.  It becomes apparent very quickly that maintaining proper levels of humidification can benefit both you and your home.

It is easy to know the relative humidity (RH) in your home; simply purchase a device that reads RH and place it anywhere in your house.  The 9960 Weather Station from the Aprilaire eStore is perfect for this application.  It is small, attractive, and can be placed on your tabletop or hung on a wall.  It displays the temperature and relative humidity in the room it is in, providing instant feedback as to one of the most critical aspects of your indoor quality.  Go to the Aprilaire estore and buy your 9960 Aprilaire Weather Station and determine if you have problems with your relative humidity today!

An Air Conditioner is Not a Dehumidifier

Monday, May 11, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....It is very common for central air conditioning systems to be oversized.  This is to minimize any calls the dealer might get in regards to lack of cooling.  However, there is a price to be paid for this in regards to the amount of dehumidification that takes place.

As you know, dehumidification is a natural byproduct, albeit minimal, of air conditioning.  When the system is sized properly, an average of about 10% of the work done by your central air conditioning pertains to dehumidification.  When the air conditioning is oversized, the home is cooled too quickly, eliminating most of the dehumidification effects, leaving your home cold and clammy, pretty much like living in a cave.

The way to properly dehumidify your home is to install a whole-house dehumidifier from Aprilaire.  It works in conjunction with your HVAC system to efficiently remove moisture from every room in your home.  And, it controls relative humidity, not temperature, so you never have to over-cool your home to achieve the optimum level of relative humidity.

Aprilaire dehumidifiers are also easy to maintain.  Unlike portable dehumidifiers that have heavy, cumbersome tanks to empty and clean, Aprilaire makes the job easy.  All the water your dehumidifier removes simply flows to the nearest drain.  Set it and forget's the Aprilaire way to dehumidify.

Humidity and Taxes

Tuesday, April 28, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Another heating season has come and gone and all of us are looking forward to warm weather and summer vacations.  Looking back, what stands out in your mind from this past winter: holiday celebrations, deer hunting, ice fishing or some other happy event?  Or, do you first think of dry, cracked skin and nasal passages, prolonged illnesses, shocks from static electricity, and damage to your home or other possessions due to lack of humidity?

We've also just passed through another season - tax season.  While none of us enjoy paying taxes, many of us do look forward to getting refund checks in the mail.  The average tax refund in 2008 was over $2,400.  What did you do with your tax refund?  Did you invest it, put it toward a vacation or spend it on some need for your home or family?

Why not invest some of your tax refund on the health of your family and protection of your possessions?  For less than 1/3 of the average tax refund, you can enjoy all the benefits that proper indoor relative humidity (RH) has to offer: improved health, comfort, preservation of your home and belongings and energy savings!  No more needless suffering from air that is too dry.

Take your tax refund check and call your Aprilaire dealer today.  Not only is it a sound investment in your family’s future health and comfort, you'll still have plenty of refund left for that fun-filled vacation.  Aprilaire - an investment in your family’s future!

It's Way Too Humid!

Friday, April 24, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
It's April 24th in Madison, Wisconsin and the temperature is 53°F.  Not bad, huh.  But, the relative humidity (RH) is a whopping 86%, which, if it hasn't already, will soon infiltrate your house and leave you feeling cold and clammy.  The question now is how do you get your RH down to 60% or below, which is the recommended level?  Most people would say that their air conditioner takes out the moisture.  However, at 53°F, that air conditioner is not coming on.  Even if the temperature was high enough to warrant air conditioning, dehumidification is only 10% of what an air conditioner does.  Not only that, but your air conditioner is controlled by temperature, not humidity.  Bottom line, you need a dehumidifier.

An Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier is your solution.  Unlike a portable dehumidifier, Aprilaire works in conjunction with your HVAC system, removing excess humidity from every room of your house.  You would need a portable dehumidifier in every room of your house to accomplish the same task, which would be very costly to own and expensive to operate.

Speaking of cost to operate, a whole-house dehumidifier, when used in conjunction with your central air conditioning system, can save you up to 20% on your electric bill.  By removing the excess humidity, you're actually lightening the load on your air conditioner.  And, with the proper level of humidity, you can raise your temperature and still feel comfortable.

Increased comfort and energy savings…Aprilaire is your solution to indoor air comfort!

Aprilaire Takes Out Humidity

Friday, April 17, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
It's not the heat, it's the humidity.  It's an old saying that certainly rings true.  High levels of moisture in the air can make you more uncomfortable than high temperatures do.  Not only that, but excess levels of humidity can bring on or amplify unwanted growth of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and mites.  Excess humidity levels can even trigger allergy and asthma symptoms.

There are other signs that can indicate you have excess humidity in your home: floors or other surfaces feel wet or sticky, mold or mildew growth, musty odors, condensation on water pipes and more.  If you are experiencing any of these conditions, call your Aprilaire dealer today and request the installation of an Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier.

An Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier provides up to three times the moisture removal of a portable dehumidifier and is up to 50% more energy efficient.  There are also no cumbersome tanks to empty and clean.  And, Aprilaire removes moisture from your entire home, unlike a portable that only removes moisture from the room it is sitting in.

Aprilaire, the best choice for whole-house dehumidification!

Aprilaire - Your Best Option for Whole-House Humidification

Thursday, April 16, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....Aprilaire humidifiers feature proven, evaporative technology that satisfy a home’s humidification needs in almost all applications.  Because of our performance and customer satisfaction track record, Aprilaire has more whole-house humidifier installations than any other manufacturer.  It's no wonder that Aprilaire is, by far, the preferred brand humidifier by dealers across the country!

Aprilaire meets performance requirements regardless of your type of heating system: gas furnace, heat pumps, electric heat, etc.  It even performs well without a call for heat.  For installations where humidification may be required, but heat is not, simply plumb the humidifier to hot water and install the Aprilaire 4851 Blower Activation Relay.  This enables your humidifier to come on with a call for humidity.

On the rare occasion an Aprilaire humidifier cannot be installed due to space restrictions on your HVAC system, there are other alternatives, such as steam, that will perform adequately.  However, you need to be aware that steam humidifiers are very expensive to install, operate, and maintain.  Operating costs can be as high as $80 per month.  You should exhaust all evaporative opportunities before choosing another style to keep your costs as low as possible.  Your Aprilaire dealer can assist you in selecting the proper humidifier for your particular needs.

Pump it Out and Dry it Out

Thursday, April 2, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
The snow is melting and the rain is pouring down.  This is the theme in Fargo, North Dakota. Flood waters are ravaging the area and water damage to homes is inevitable.  These flood waters will head south and do damage to other areas of the country as well.  What do you do if your home has been flooded?

The first thing you need to do is pump out the standing water.  Once that is gone, there is still plenty of drying out that needs to take place: soaked carpets, woodwork, drywall, etc. You need to get all that moisture out now before mold, mildew and odors have a chance to invade your home.  A free-standing dehumidifier from Aprilaire is your solution.  At 90 pints per day, it can take out 3 to 4 times the moisture of a department store model.  It's also built to commercial standards, making it more reliable in these tough to dry out situations.

Don't delay!  Call your local Aprilaire dealer and ask how you can get a Model 1710 dehumidifier for your needs today!

Choosing the Best Humidifier for Your Needs

Tuesday, March 31, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
You know you need a humidifier when you have dry, itchy skin, you get shocked from static electricity daily, your hair literally stands on end, and you may even have cracked, bleeding skin or have experienced nose bleeds.  All these symptoms can be very frustrating and become unbearable.  But what humidifier is best for you?  With all the options out there today, it can be confusing.

The best solution is a whole-house humidifier, which works in conjunction with your home's HVAC system to add humidity to all the rooms of your home.  In contrast, while a portable humidifier may be convenient to purchase, it only adds humidity to the room it is sitting in (I assume you live in more than one room of your house).  Portable humidifiers are also noisy, unattractive to look at, and are a hassle to maintain since they constantly need to be filled with water.

The most popular whole-house humidifier design, by far, is a flow-through evaporative humidifier, the kind sold by Aprilaire.  The unit mounts to your HVAC system’s duct work, out of sight and out of mind, quietly adding soothing humidification to all the rooms in your home.  Water flows to the unit automatically and once-a-year maintenance is a breeze.

Another style that is becoming more popular is the steam humidifier.  Some steam units have the advantage of being remotely mounted.  This comes in handy if there is limited room on the duct work, making the installation of an evaporative style unit impossible.  However, there is a trade-off.  Steam humidifiers cost 50% or more to install.  They also consume large amounts of electricity, which can increase your monthly utility bill from $50 to $70.  Maintenance costs can also be a detraction, depending on the style of the humidifier.

Bottom line, for the vast majority of installations, a flow-through evaporative style humidifier from Aprilaire will satisfy your home’s humidification requirements.  Aprilaire costs less to install, less to operate and is easier and less costly to maintain.  Aprilaire is the choice for whole-house humidification.

Make it Easy with Aprilaire

Tuesday, March 24, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Spring is here!  That means for those of us that have humidifiers, we have to do some end of season maintenance.  If you have a portable humidifier, you need to empty it out, clean it up, pack it away in its box and store it for the summer.  This keeps you from tripping over it all summer long.  If you have more than one, you need to do this several times over.  You should be used to it; you've been filling the units with water (every day all winter long), making sure not to spill while walking through your house, and being careful not to throw your back out as you stoop over to set it back down.  What a hassle!

I have a whole-house humidifier with automatic digital control from Aprilaire.  My end-of-season procedure is to turn my bypass damper to the summer position.  That's it.  If I choose, I can change the water panel out now or in the fall as I prepare for next winter's humidification season.  Along with changing the water panel, I simply wipe away any mineral deposits that have built up and check the drain tube to make sure it is clear of any blockage.  How simple is that?  A little bit of work required at the end of the season after doing nothing all winter long.  Nothing, that is, except enjoy all the benefits that whole-house humidification has to offer for my health, comfort, and protection.

Tired of all the work that comes with a portable humidifier?  Call your Aprilaire dealer today and make an appointment to get your Aprilaire humidifier installed.

Dehumidify for a Health House

Monday, March 23, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....The presence of mold in your home can bring on serious implications: it is very expensive to remove, it can bring on strong allergic reactions and affect neurological functions in those that have weaker immune systems (e.g. children, elderly) and it can drastically reduce the value of your home.

There are several things you can do to prevent mold from invading your home.  One of the best ways is to remove excess moisture.  Excess moisture can come from poor ventilation in bathrooms, sweaty water pipes, leaky basements, and more.

The best way to remove mold-causing moisture is to install a whole-house dehumidifier from Aprilaire.  Unlike portable dehumidifiers that only remove moisture from the room they sit in, an Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier works in conjunction with your home's heating and cooling system to remove moisture from your entire house.  Also, it removes moisture with precise control, operating only when the relative humidity exceeds your humidistat setting.

Protect Your Home and Valuables with Proper Humidification

Wednesday, March 18, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....A whole-house humidifier is an excellent way to protect your home, your wood furnishings and your valuable electronics.  If wood gets too dry, it can crack and separate, ruining the appearance and the value.  Just think of all the wood you have in your home: kitchen cabinets, flooring and trim, entertainment centers, furniture, musical instruments and more.  You can prevent damage to all of these by maintaining proper levels of humidification throughout your entire home.

What about your electronic equipment?  Proper humidification can help prevent damage from static electricity to your computers, stereo equipment, televisions and more.  Imagine, no more walking across the carpet and getting shocked when you touch them.

Unlike a portable humidifier, a whole-house humidifier from Aprilaire puts soothing, protecting moisture in every room in your home.  And, it is controlled to the level you set. This is very important, as over-humidifying can cause problems, too.  Mold and mildew are all too common when humidity is not controlled.

Aprilaire - whole-house protection and whole-house control!  Call your Aprilaire dealer today and ask how you can protect your home and valuables.

Did you know dehumidification is a natural

Thursday, March 12, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....dehumidification is a natural byproduct of air conditioning.  However, 90% of what your air conditioner does is remove heat from the air and only 10% is moisture removal.  Not only that, but your air conditioner is controlled by a thermostat, which measures temperature, not relative humidity.  The result is a home that hits its temperature target, but can leave the home saturated with excess moisture, resulting in a home with a clammy, damp feeling.

A dehumidifier, on the other hand, is designed for moisture removal.  Its only purpose is to remove the excess moisture in your home; moisture that can lead to mildew, mold, unpleasant odors, and their resulting health implications.

Unlike a portable dehumidifier, a whole-house dehumidifier removes this moisture from your entire home, not just a single room.  And it's simple to operate and maintain.  It is controlled by a dehumidistat, which measures the amount of moisture in the air and controls that level to your desired setting.  There are no tanks to continually empty and sanitize.  It operates quietly in your equipment room, out of sight and out of mind.

All of this comfort and protection is easy to obtain.  Simply contact your nearest Aprilaire dealer and ask how you, too, can enjoy the comfort and benefits of whole-house dehumidification.

Did you know flu viruses survive longer

Tuesday, March 10, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Did you know....flu viruses survive longer and are more easily transmitted when humidity levels are low, such as in the peak flu months of January and February, Oregon researchers say.

“When absolute humidity is low, influenza virus survival is prolonged and transmission rates go up”, study author Jeffrey Shaman, an atmospheric scientist at OSU who specializes in ties between climate and disease transmission, said in the news release.

"In some areas of the country, a typical summer day can have four times as much water vapor as a typical winter day -- a difference that exists both indoors and outdoors," Shaman said. "Consequently, outbreaks of influenza typically occur in winter when low absolute humidity conditions strongly favor influenza survival and transmission."

What can you do to increase the humidity in your home and protect your family from the flu virus and other health ailments?  The answer is simple; a whole-house humidifier from Aprilaire.  Unlike portable humidifiers, it humidifies your entire home, not just one room.  And Aprilaire makes controlling the humidity in your home easy with its premium digital control.  It automatically controls the humidity at the optimum level, protecting you and
your house 24/7.  Stay healthy with Aprilaire!

Live in One Room in Your Home? Not!

Thursday, February 26, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
When you are at home, do you spend all your time in your bedroom?  Your living room or kitchen?  Absolutely not.  You are constantly moving about from room to room, depending on what you are doing at the time.  As such, does it make sense that you have a portable dehumidifier in just your basement, or just in your living room?  Absolutely not!  You want to be comfortable no matter which room of your house you are in.

Your needs for dehumidification will differ depending on where you live.  In the south, you have concerns about mold, mildew and general discomfort due to nearly year-round high levels of humidity.  In the north, where basements are prevalent, you need to eliminate the musty smell that comes naturally from this area of the home.  You also have the spring and fall seasons where there is no need for air conditioning, but it is humid, so you feel uncomfortable, even though the temperature is okay.

Regardless of your needs, a portable dehumidifier only removes moisture from the area that it is sitting in.  Would you prefer a portable dehumidifier sitting on the floor in every room of your home, making noise, with containers to empty, making your electrical meter spin?  Or, would you prefer a whole-house dehumidifier that sits next to your heating and cooling system, out of sight, no noise issues, no tank to empty, and highly energy efficient?  The choice is easy, for all the right reasons.  Aprilaire is your solution for whole-house dehumidification.

Bucky Needs a Humidifier!

Tuesday, February 24, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl
Last Sunday, my family and I had the pleasure of attending a University of Wisconsin Women's Basketball game.  It was a wild hoop-fest in which the Badger women managed to pull out a thrilling 54-51 victory over first-place Michigan State.  Congratulations Bucky!  While I have been to many Badger sporting events over the years, this was the first time we had seen the women play basketball.  The entire family enjoyed this exciting event.

I also witnessed something I have not seen in quite a while; my youngest daughter's hair standing on end from static electricity.  She was quite the sight.  Not only that, her older brother was constantly complaining how he received a shock every time she touched him.  It was quite evident that Bucky needs a humidifier!

We used to joke and make fun of the kids at home when their hair stood on end.  We haven't been able to do that since we installed our Aprilaire humidifier with premium digital control.  Dry air and all its problems no longer exist in our home; static electricity, dry itchy skin, and even bloody noses, are all things of the past.

Our home has also been healthier this year.  While the cold and flu season has been running rampant through the schools, causing a high level of absenteeism, our household has been relatively unscathed (and when you have four kids like we do, you can appreciate it when they are healthy and no one misses work or school).  Aprilaire has made our house a healthier, more comfortable place to live.
