Aprilaire Keeps Your Humidity in the Optimum Range

Tuesday, March 30, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know...for the ultimate in health, comfort, and protection, you need to control the humidity in your home year-round.  This typically means adding humidity in the winter and removing moisture in the summer to get to the "Optimum Zone" of 30% to 60% relative humidity (RH).  Optimum RH levels minimize or eliminate problems including bacteria, viruses, fungi, mites, respiratory infections, and more!

Aprilaire equals optimum
Aprilaire whole-house humidifiers and dehumidifiers work in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system, out-of-sight and out-of-mind, to control the RH levels throughout your entire home.  Aprilaire also makes maintenance a breeze, with only a few annual tasks required.  With Aprilaire, you'll never have to hear, or look at, an unsightly, noisy room unit again.

Call your Aprilaire dealer for control over your RH.  Your dealer can recommend the Aprilaire model that is right for you, as well as recommend other Aprilaire indoor air quality (IAQ) products that protect your family’s health and comfort.  Call today, you'll be glad you did.

Aprilaire Humidifier End-of-Season Requirements

Wednesday, March 17, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

Attention Aprilaire humidifier owners!  First of all, congratulations on making it through a grueling winter.  It was cold, snowy and nasty outside, with record-breaking low temperatures and record breaking snowfalls.  But thanks to your insight, Aprilaire protected your family and your home from the potential devastation of dry air.

Time to call it a season
With the end of the humidifier season comes a couple of simple tasks to perform.  First, be sure you are confident you will no longer require humidification, then follow these easy end-of-season tasks.  If you have a bypass-style humidifier, you need to close the bypass damper.  Simply turn the handle from the "winter" to the "summer" position.  If you have a fan-powered Aprilaire humidifier, no adjustments are required.

Next, if you have an automatic control that is operating in the manual mode, or if you have the Aprilaire manual control, you need to turn the control knob to the "Off" position.  This will ensure your humidifier will not turn on during the summer months (when you already have more than enough humidity).  If you have an automatic control that is operating in the "Automatic" mode, there is no adjustment required.  The outdoor temperature sensor will prevent your humidifier from coming on whenever the outdoor temperature is 60 degrees or higher.

Also, don't forget to call your Aprilaire dealer this fall to perform the annual humidifier maintenance.  Your dealer will change your water panel, inspect the water delivery system, and replace any components that are fouled or worn.  This indoor air quality (IAQ) expert is trained to keep your Aprilaire humidifier operating at peak performance.

Aprilaire - Your Whole-House Solution to Dry Air

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

This winter's unseasonably cold weather has caused all of us to spend a lot more time indoors  than we are used to.  The only time most of us have ventured outside has been to clear the  driveway of the piles of white stuff that every state except Hawaii has been blessed with.  This extra time indoors has led many of us to ponder the quality of air in our homes, qualities including dust, temperature, and, in particular, humidity.  Lack of proper levels of humidity are immediately apparent in dry, itchy skin, static shock, dry and cracked nasal passages, irritated throats and more.

Aprilaire is the solution for dry air
Aprilaire whole-house humidifiers provide soothing, humidified air to every room of your home.  It conveniently mounts to your home’s HVAC system, operating quietly, out of sight and out of mind.  Except for the dramatic increase in comfort and health, you'll never even know it's there.  Aprilaire humidifiers are also known for ease of maintenance.  There are no tanks to fill or clean.  Simply change the water panel evaporator once a year to keep your humidifier operating efficiently and trouble-free.

Contact your Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your whole-house humidifier today.  Your contractor can recommend the Aprilaire model that is right for you and also recommend other Aprilaire whole-house products that can improve your health and comfort.

Aprilaire - Your Whole House Dehumidifier Solution

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

It's hard to believe with all the cold weather we've experienced this month that spring is less than two months away.  Soon, the furnace will stop running and we'll be in that waiting period before the air conditioning season begins.  This is the time when your home’s indoor relative humidity (RH) begins to rise and gets to levels that are not only uncomfortable, but could also be damaging to your home.

Since dehumidification is a natural byproduct of air conditioning, you could turn on your air conditioner to remove this moisture.  But to do this, you must turn your thermostat down to levels that are too cold for comfort.  You could purchase a portable dehumidifier, but then you have to constantly empty and clean the tank.  And don't forget to turn up the  television, because you need to hear it over the sound the portable makes.  Bottom line, neither of these are good solutions to your moisture problems

Aprilaire is your whole-house solution
Aprilaire has a complete line of whole-house dehumidifiers that work in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system to quietly and efficiently remove excess moisture from every room of your home.  Aprilaire is also user-friendly, with no tanks to empty and only annual maintenance required.  Not only will your home be a more comfortable place to live, but you will also prevent damage caused by mold, mildew, and more.

Call your Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your whole-house dehumidifier today.  You'll be glad you did.

Aprilaire Premium Digital Humidifier Control

Thursday, January 21, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

With the recent cold snap, did you notice any condensation on your home's windows?  If you have either a portable humidifier or a whole-house humidifier with manual control, odds are you had water pouring off your windows when the mercury dipped way down.  This forced you to either turn down or turn off your humidifier to prevent damage that comes from this excess moisture.

Question - did you remember to turn your humidifier back on once the weather warmed back up?  Chances are you did not.  Maybe you did, but probably not until you began to suffer some or all the ailments that come with dry, winter air: stuffy nose, scratchy throat, and itchy skin, just to name a few.  What can you do to ensure your home is properly humidified, day after day, regardless of outdoor temperature?  The answer is simple - install an Aprilaire humidifier with premium digital control.

Automatic control is the key

The Aprilaire premium digital humidifier control works in conjunction with an outdoor temperature sensor, automatically raising and lowering the relative humidity (RH) in your home to achieve the optimal level of humidification.  This protects your home from the damage that can come from excess RH while still providing the comfort and health that comes from properly humidified air.  This "set it and forget it" feature means you'll never have the hassle of raising and lowering your control setting again.

Call your local Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your Aprilaire humidifier with premium control today.  If you already have a whole-house humidifier but do not have automatic control, ask your dealer about upgrading.  You'll be glad you did.

Aprilaire - Protecting you and your home, automatically, for over 50 years!

Aprilaire Humidifier Control Eliminates Hassles

Friday, December 11, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

A question from Perry in Chicago

"I have a question. I have an old Aprilaire humidifier attached to my home's furnace. There is a dial on it that says either dry (20 or lower) or moist, 40 or higher. So what does this mean? the label says relative humidity, but does that mean the relative humidity outside or inside my house? I live in chicago, and its 0 degrees today and my basement windows have so much moisture on them, that they have iced over! I had the RH dial set to DRY, or 25-30. Help!"

This is a great question, Perry.  From your description, it sounds like you have a manual humidifier control, which means you have to change the setting on your control as the temperature changes outside.  Your home can achieve a higher relative humidity (RH) when the outside temperature is higher without moisture forming on your windows.  However, when the outside temperature drops, like it recently did in the upper midwest, you will form moisture on your windows if you don't dial down the control.

Outside TemperatureRecommended RH
+40F45%
+30F40%
+20F35%
+10F30%
0F25%
-10F20%
-20F15%

As you can see from the table above, at 0 degrees F, the recommended RH is 25%.  However, this can vary from home to home, depending on the level of insulation in the walls, type of windows, how tight your home is, etc.  With the extreme temperatures you are experiencing, your control should be down to almost it's lowest level.

Automatic control removes the hassles
To eliminate the hassle of constantly adjusting your control, I would suggest you call your local Aprilaire dealer and ask him to upgrade you to an Aprilaire automatic digital humidifier control.  It works in conjunction with an outdoor temperature sensor to adjust your indoor RH according to the outside temperature.  After the initial setup, you never have to adjust it again.  We call it the "set it and forget it" control.  The control also tells you your indoor RH, when to change the water panel and if service is required.

Thanks for the question, Perry, and thanks for buying Aprilaire products.

Aprilaire Provides Humidity When You Need It

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know....Whole-house evaporative, or flow-through, humidifiers are designed to work in conjunction with your home’s heating system to provide controlled humidification throughout your entire home.  These humidifiers typically operate whenever your thermostat is calling for heat and your humidifier control indicates a need for humidification.  However, what if you live in a mild climate where there is not much call for heat, but your air is still dry?  You need a way for the humidifier to turn on your HVAC blower so you can be protected from all the ailments of dry air.

The Aprilaire Blower Activation Relay (part number 4851) is an easy to install device that enables you to turn on your HVAC blower on a call for humidity.  The installation of this device enables you to enjoy all the benefits of proper humidification regardless of a call for heat.  Your local Aprilaire dealer can install the Blower Activation Relay in a matter of minutes.  The only other requirement to get adequate capacity is to make sure the humidifier is plumbed to hot water.

Call your Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your whole-house humidifier today.  And if you're concerned you do not get enough heating system run-time, ask about the Blower Activation Relay.  You'll be glad you did.

Is My Indoor Relative Humidity OK?

Wednesday, November 18, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Question from Jim Brockway

"At 68 degrees in home, my humidity is 25.  Is that OK?"

Excellent question, Jim.  The answer is...it depends.  The critical temperature is not the temperature inside your home, but the temperature outside your home.  Have I confused you yet?  Let me explain.

The proper level of indoor relative humidity (RH) is a moving target based mainly on the outdoor temperature.  The lower the outdoor temperature, the lower your indoor RH% should be.  This is to prevent condensation from forming on your windows and in your walls.  An example would be a glass of your favorite beverage with and without ice in it.  Without ice, the beverage is warmer and the outside of your glass stays dry.  When you add ice to chill it, the outside surface of the glass is cold and begins to sweat.  Unless you have a coaster, you get water all over the surface it's sitting on, which can ruin it.

Proper indoor RH is no different.  An Aprilaire whole-house humidifier with premium digital control utilizes an outdoor temperature sensor to continually adjust your indoor RH, providing maximum comfort and protection 24/7.

Now, to answer your question, 25% indoor RH is about perfect when your outdoor temperature is at 0 degrees Fahrenheit.  That's pretty cold.  At 20 degrees Fahrenheit, you should be around 35%, and at 40 degrees or higher, you should be at 45% indoor RH.  I'm going to guess that your outdoor temperature is not zero and that you are in dire need of humidification.  Please contact your local Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your Aprilaire humidifier with premium digital control today.

Thanks for the question, Jim.

Aprilaire is Your Whole-House Humidifier Solution

Tuesday, October 20, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

You know you need a humidifier.  You understand all the benefits that come with properly humidified air: health, comfort, protection of assets, and energy savings.  Now comes the tricky part; which humidifier do you buy?

Answer these three questions before you purchase
There are three simple questions you need to ask yourself to determine which humidifier is best for you:

1) Is noise important?
2) Do you have children?
3) How much humidification do you require?

We covered items one and two in our last blogs.  Let's finish up with number three today by asking how much humidification do you require.  Or, put another way, how many rooms do you have and how big are they?

Your house has more than one room
Unless you live in a one-room efficiency, you probably have 2-3 bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and more.  It would take one portable humidifier for every room in your home to adequately increase your comfort and protect your valuable possessions.  That's five or more units to fill and clean every day.  And, have the remote control for your TV handy as you'll have to crank up the volume to get over all the noise.

A whole-house humidifier from Aprilaire is your best solution.  It works in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system to add soothing, protecting moisture to every room in your home.  It operates quietly and efficiently, with only annual maintenance required: no tanks to fill and clean, no noise, no hassles.

Call your Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your whole-house humidifier today.  You'll be glad you did.

Now is the Time to Maintain Your Humidifier

Monday, October 12, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Comment from Denise
It's time for me to replace the filters on my Aprilaire humidifiers.  Please contact me with information on how to do that.  Thank you.

Hi Denise,
The filters you refer to are called water panel evaporators and they are the heart of an Aprilaire humidifier.  This is where the moisture is picked up by the air in your heating system, and from there is distributed throughout your home.  To maintain optimum humidifier performance, it is recommended that you change this item on an annual basis.

The best way to have your humidifier properly serviced is by your local Aprilaire dealer.  Your local dealer will have the expertise to not only change out the water panel evaporator, but also to check other critical aspects of the humidifier to ensure it performs properly this upcoming heating season.

If you feel you can do it yourself, you can still purchase the water panel evaporator over
the counter from your local Aprilaire dealer.  If you don't have a dealer, you can purchase from the Aprilaire e-store.  All orders ship out same day for your convenience.

Thank you for your inquiry, Denise.  And thank you for supporting Aprilaire.

Humidify For Your Health

Tuesday, August 11, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know.....Research indicates there are indirect health effects of relative humidity (RH) in indoor environments.  A research article found on PubMed Central suggests that RH can affect the incidence of respiratory infections and allergies.  Experimental studies on airborne-transmitted infectious bacteria and viruses show that survival or infectivity is minimized when RH is maintained between 40% and 70%.

How does this affect you?  This study also found that the incidence of absenteeism and respiratory infections was found to be lower among people working or living in environments with mid-range versus low or high relative humidity.  This basically says that you will be happy and healthier when the space you live and work in has proper levels of RH.

Aprilaire has the solution
Aprilaire whole-house humidifiers work with your home's HVAC system to provide soothing moisture throughout your entire home, protecting you and your family from the ill-affects of air that is too dry.  And Aprilaire's "set it and forget it" technology means years of automatic, trouble-free operation for years to come.

Call your Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your humidifier today.  Your family will thank you for it.

Whole-House Dehumidifier for Health and Protection

Tuesday, June 30, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Wisconsin weather sure is whacky.  Today is June 30, 2009.  At the time I am blogging this, it is 61 degrees outside with a relative humidity (RH) of 72%.  Last week at this time, we had temps in the high eighties and low nineties with high humidity to boot.  Air conditioners and dehumidifiers were working as hard as they could to remove heat and moisture, giving homeowners ultimate comfort and protection.

No air conditioning required
72% RH is a perfect breeding ground for things like mold and dust mites.  Some people would say their air conditioning will take care of excess humidity.  However, at 61 degrees, your air conditioning is not going to come on.  At this point, you have a decision to make; you can either suffer the consequences of high humidity, or you can install an Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier to protect your health and home.

Aprilaire is the perfect solution.  It installs with your home’s HVAC system, out of sight and out of mind, quietly removing moisture from your entire home.  And, unlike portable dehumidifiers that only remove moisture from the room they are in, there are no tanks to empty and clean on a daily basis.

Call your Aprilaire dealer today and request an Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier.  You'll be glad you did.

Too Cool For A/C, But Too Humid for Comfort

Thursday, June 18, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

It is Thursday, June 18, 2009 in Madison, Wisconsin.  The temperature is 66°F.  No need to run the air conditioning with this temperature.  But are you comfortable?  Probably not.  Why?  The relative humidity (RH) is a whopping 88%!

A whole-house dehumidifier is the solution
Dehumidification is a natural by-product of air conditioning.  However, only 10% of what an air conditioner does is dehumidify, and it is controlled by temperature, not RH.  The solution to maintaining your comfort on these very typical days is to have your Aprilaire dealer install a whole-house dehumidifier.  It works in conjunction with your home's HVAC system to remove excess moisture from your entire house, not just a single room like a portable dehumidifier.  And because it controls to RH, not temperature, you don't over cool your house to remove moisture.

Call your Aprilaire dealer and get your whole-house dehumidifier installed today!

Humidity During Heating Months is Essential

Thursday, June 18, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

I had a great comment to one of my blogs yesterday in regards to the need for proper humidification.  Wellsacs7 wrote:

"I know how valuable it is to have a humidifier in your home.  I know that having a humidifier all year around is great, but they are increasingly important during the months where heating a home is essential."

This comment is dead-on correct.  In the winter months, your furnace or heat pump not only heats the air, it dries it out.  The dry air can cause all kinds of problems related to your comfort and health, not to mention your home and possessions.

Thanks for the great comment!  Keep 'em coming.

Dehumidify to Prevent Mold in Your Home

Friday, June 12, 2009 by Dennie Plomedahl

Did you know....Mold can have devastating affects on your home and your health.  In some extreme cases, entire houses have been condemned due to the grave health concerns that mold infestation can cause.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lists moisture and mold prevention and control tips on their website.  One of the tips is "Keep indoor humidity low.  If possible, keep indoor humidity below 60 percent (ideally between 30 and 50 percent) relative humidity."

Actions that will help to reduce humidity
One of the actions the EPA suggests to reduce humidity in the home is the use of a dehumidifier.  Aprilaire would like to take this one step further - use a whole-house dehumidifier.  While a portable dehumidifier only removes moisture from the room it is in, an Aprilaire whole-house dehumidifier works in conjunction with your HVAC system to remove moisture from every room in your home.

An Aprilaire dehumidifier is also easy to maintain with no tanks to lift and empty.  Simply clean the air filter every year and you're good to go.  Call your Aprilaire dealer today and ask how you can benefit from having an Aprilaire dehumidifier installed in your home.

Aprilaire - preventing mold growth to protect the health of you and your family.
