Whole Home Humidifier...but with independence.

Friday, March 5, 2010 by Aprilaire Team
Question submitted to Aprilaire:

Do these units work independently from your current heating  system.
I have a forced air unit located in a closet accessed from the  outside.
This is in the mountains of Colorado where freezing is a  problem.  Cannot
connect humidification systems directly to the furnace for  that reason.
Would this unit be hooked up to a water supply so it would work all  the time or
does one need to add water when it is needed

Aprilaires' response:

Our models 350 and 360 are independent units.  They do not connect to the HVAC System at all.

They do connect with a hot water line.  Simply tap into a hot water line from your house so that they can get water as needed.  They also need a drain line connected to them and an outlet for power.

They come with a manual control humidistat that gets mounted on a wall in your living space.

I want to upgrade!!

Friday, March 5, 2010 by Aprilaire Team
Question submmited to Aprilaire:

I have a Model 5000 filter. I'd like to get an upgrade kit, but I am not sure whether there is one that would fit. I am confused between the Model 2400 and 5000 and the media for each. Are these two different models with interchangeable parts?

Aprilaires' response:

There is no upgrade at this time for the model 5000 electronic air cleaner.  Because of the electronics involved, we have not yet come up with an upgrade for this unit.

The size of the 5000 is the same as the size for the 2400.  Although, the 2400 is not electronic.  Also the filter used in the 2400, even though the same size, is not recommended for use in the 5000, just as the filter for the 5000 is not recommended for use in the 2400.  The 501 filter for the 5000 has metalic stripping on the pleats of the filter.  These are necessary for the correct operation of the 5000.  If you put a 401 filter into the 5000, sure it would catch dust, but you would loose all the electronic capabilities that you purchased the 5000 for in the first place.

Interested in installing a whole house humidifier...but which one?

Friday, March 5, 2010 by Aprilaire Team
Question submitted to Aprilaire:

I am interested in installing a whole house humidifier. Primary reason is to reduce crackin

Our house is 18 months old and has a conventional A/C system with ceiling mounted air vents. At the moment they are closed and covered with magnetic vent covers for the winter.

For heat we have a gas fired boiler providing hot water for an in floor radiant heat system "warm board".

Question: Would an Aprilaire system work in conjunction with this type of heat? I assume system would relay on using A/C ducts with a continuous air flow/fan to distribute moist air.

Aprilaires' response:

Thank you for contacting us regarding your interest in the Aprilaire humidifier product line. We are happy to assist you with questions relating to a humidifier recommendation for your application. Based upon the information provided it appears that your heating application consists of hot water radiant floor heat with no duct work required for that system. This type of heating application would typically require the use of one of our self contained humidifiers such as the 350 and 360 models. However, in your application it appears that you do have an air conditioning application that is currently utilizing duct work. Since you do have an air conditioning application in the home the air handler and duct work from this application could be utilized for the use of an Aprilaire whole home humidifier. When utilizing one of our duct mounted humidifiers on an air handler of an air conditioning application, it would require that the humidifier be utilized with hot water at all times and to work in conjunction with the fan operation of the air handler. This type of installation of the application will still allow the humidifier to provide optimum levels of humidification into the home during the driest time of the year. We have listed several questions below that will assist us in identifying the best humidifier for your application at this time.

1.The square footage of the home?
2.The ceiling height within the home?
3.The age of the home?
4.Any new renovations to the home such as windows, siding, and/or insulation?
5.The number of heating systems?
6.The type of heat?
7.Is there access to a drain?

We would be glad to further assist you regarding a recommendation for your application. Upon receiving further information regarding your application, we can determine which product would be best for your application. However, the best individual to make the final decision on a product for your application is a Licensed HVAC contractor.  If you could please reply to this email at your earliest convenience, we would be delighted to assist you further.

Dirty Ducts and Laundry Shoots

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Tom Ruse
Air Duct Cleaning. Some think it's a scam. I doubt that, but I expect the need would depend on your home and your family. There's no question dust and all sorts of nasty things get hung up in heat ducts and can dislodge and become airborne again. Is it worth it to get them cleaned? Probably. Especially if you have allergies.

Here's a loosly related story about things getting hung up.

When I bought my house it was about 30 years old; a big 2-story; solid, well-built but really worn. Needed alot of work. It had been a foster home for years and it really showed the wear and tear.

One of the nice features I remember when we looked at this house was a laundry shoot; crucial really, especially for a two story with laundry facilities in the basement (two flights down from the bedrooms, where most of the laundry comes from and goes to).  REALLY handy!

It was a good sized shoot. You could stick your whole head in and look around. Once in a while we'd catch the kids climbing in and dropping down into a pile of dirty clothes on the basement floor (Thankfully they never tried this from the 2nd floor).

When we first moved in I noticed something hanging in the shoot between floors. A rag or a piece of clothing or something got caught on nail or something protruding from the wall inside the shoot.

I got a broom handle and snagged it. It was a very large pair of women's underpants. About the size that would've fit the previous owner. Presumable dirty, since it was hung up in the laundry shoot! EEEEEEW!

So, who knows what kind of treasures might be hanging around inside your air ducts!

Get a contractor to check it out occasionally! And while you're at it, have your entire HVAC system cleaned and checked.

Aprilaire - Your Solution to Unsightly Dryness

Monday, March 1, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

"Seeing is believing" is a statement that rings true for most of us.  We won't believe something unless we've actually seen it with our own eyes.  Sometimes the impact of a situation doesn't really hit you unless you've actually seen it.  An example is the horrifying death of the Georgian luger at this year’s winter Olympics.

What is it that you're seeing lately: dry itchy skin, warped or cracked woodwork in your home, static electricity, nose bleeds?  Are you horrified to see this happening to you, your family, or your home?  Now that you've seen the effects of dry air, are you ready to take action?

Aprilaire is the answer
A whole-house humidifier from Aprilaire solves all your problems associated with dry air.  It works in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system to add soothing humidity to every room of your home.  This protective moisture improves your family’s health and preserves your valuable assets from the excruciating effects of dry air.  Call your local Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of an Aprilaire humidifier today.  Your family and your home will thank you.

Why do you need whole-house air cleaning? Consider this:

Thursday, February 25, 2010 by Justin Randall

    * Each person inhales over 3,500 gallons of air each day. Children inhale more particles for their size then adolescents or adults.
    * Polluted air causes 94% of all respiratory problems.
    * More than 31 million Americans have been diagnosed with asthma, about 1/3 are children under 18.
    * About 40,000 dust mites, a common household allergen, can live in one ounce of dust.
    * An estimated 10-15% of the entire population may be allergic to cat or dog dander.
    * A person sheds up to 700,000 skin flakes per day.

These are just a few of the reasons to make sure your home is protected by having a whole house air cleaner installed.  A high efficiency whole house air cleaner from Aprilaire makes your home healthier and cleaner.  The EPA states that indoor air is often times more polluted then outdoor air so cleaning the air in your home is more important then ever.

If you currently have an Aprilaire air cleaner you can upgrade it to our newest media that removes more particulate from the air.  Call you local contractor and tell them you want to upgrade your Aprilaire air cleaner today.  For a small investment you can improve your current air filter.

Aprilaire Dehumidifies Your Entire Home

Friday, February 19, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

Springtime is just around the corner.  Soon all of us will be able to turn off the furnace, open the windows, and let some fresh air in the house.  Or will we?  The outdoor temperature seems inviting, but how's that humidity?  When you open those windows, do you also open up the potential to bring in lots of moisture that can make you uncomfortable as well as damage your home?  You could keep the windows closed and turn on the air conditioner in an effort to dry out the air.  But now you’re too cold...and frustrated.

Aprilaire has your dehumidification solution
Aprilaire has a full line of whole-house dehumidifiers that provide all the health and comfort benefits that come with proper levels of humidification.  Aprilaire dehumidifiers work quietly in conjunction with your home’s HVAC system to protect every room of your home from the downfalls of excess moisture.  This includes your health and comfort, as well as your personal property.  Maintenance is a breeze with Aprilaire as well.  There are no messy tanks to empty and clean.  Simply clean the filter once a year and you're good to go.

Contact your local Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your whole-house dehumidifier today.  You'll immediately feel the difference.

Still Dry and getting shocked!!

Friday, February 19, 2010 by Aprilaire Team
Question:
For some reason, the humidifier does not increase the RH above 20% even on the highest setting (7).  Our home is 4 years old and under 3,000 sq ft.  It was installed for automatic operation with the outside air sensor.  Any idea about what the problem could be?

Answer:

We would suggest that you contact the HVAC contractor who installed the humidifier and have them verify if it is working properly. If you want to trouble shoot it yourself you can call our technical support department at 1-800-334-6011 Monday - Friday from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM central time) and we would be glad to help you determine if it is working properly.

Once we can determine wether or not the humidifier is evaporating .75 gallons per hour, we can take the next step. If it's evaporating less than .75 we should be able to find out why and fix it. If it is evaporating properly but you still don't have enough humidity in your home, we need to make the humidifier run longer to add more humidity.

The most common reason for lack of humidity is lack of run time. If the humidifier runs every time the furnace comes on, runs whole time the furnace is on, and gets forced to turn off when the furnace goes off, it is added as much humidity as the furnace is allowing it to. If the humidifier could run longer it would. So if the humidifier is wired to run with the furnace fan, if you run your furnace fan continually, and if the humidifier is connected to hot water (140 Max) the humidifier can add up to 18 gallons of water to the air per day.

I hope this helps, please let us know if you or your HVAC contractor need any other assistance.

Aprilaire - Your Whole-House Solution to Dry Air

Thursday, February 18, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

This winter's unseasonably cold weather has caused all of us to spend a lot more time indoors  than we are used to.  The only time most of us have ventured outside has been to clear the  driveway of the piles of white stuff that every state except Hawaii has been blessed with.  This extra time indoors has led many of us to ponder the quality of air in our homes, qualities including dust, temperature, and, in particular, humidity.  Lack of proper levels of humidity are immediately apparent in dry, itchy skin, static shock, dry and cracked nasal passages, irritated throats and more.

Aprilaire is the solution for dry air
Aprilaire whole-house humidifiers provide soothing, humidified air to every room of your home.  It conveniently mounts to your home’s HVAC system, operating quietly, out of sight and out of mind.  Except for the dramatic increase in comfort and health, you'll never even know it's there.  Aprilaire humidifiers are also known for ease of maintenance.  There are no tanks to fill or clean.  Simply change the water panel evaporator once a year to keep your humidifier operating efficiently and trouble-free.

Contact your Aprilaire dealer and schedule the installation of your whole-house humidifier today.  Your contractor can recommend the Aprilaire model that is right for you and also recommend other Aprilaire whole-house products that can improve your health and comfort.

Upon Further Review - IS Online retailer Cleartheairinc.com misleading the consumer? Maybe NOT!

Friday, February 12, 2010 by Tom Ruse
I posted the comments below on Friday and since then,  the kind folks at Cleartheairinc.com have... well.... cleared the air.

They assure me their intentions were never to mislead. I guess I'll never know that for 100% sure,  but I'm ready to give them the benefit of the doubt. After reading of my concerns they immediately took action to modify the language on their site and clarify what the consumer is buying.

I applaud their quick response and willingness to set things right.

Good luck,  and if you're happy purchasing filters for Aprilaire Air Cleaners that are not made by Aprilaire,  Cleartheairinc.com seems like a fair place to trade.

Tom

From Friday......

Don't buy from this site if you are interested in receiving the quality of product provided by the original manufacturer! THESE ARE KNOCK-OFFS!

Cleartheairinc.com is misleading you.  It describes knock-off replacement filters as Aprilaire and SpaceGard.  THEY ARE NOT MADE BY APRILAIRE!

The site tries to cleverly describe the filter as "Clear the Air's Aprilaire Spacegard replacement filter". They probably do this so that they could argue that legally they are calling it a "Clear the Air" brand and therefore NOT misleading the consumer into thinking they are buying an Aprilaire brand.

You decide. Take a look.  Would you think you were buying a filter made by Aprilaire or SpaceGard on this page?

They do this with other brands as well.

Sleazy.

If you have an Aprilaire or SpaceGard air purifier / air cleaner and you typically replace the flters yourself,  ask an Aprilaire dealer in your area. Often they will sell them to you off the shelf. And they'll be the real deal!

UNLIKE CLEARTHEAIRINC.COM, I'LL BE VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD WITH YOU.  Take a look at the estore on Aprilaire.com , just so you get an idea of what the real thing looks like.

Sure, you can buy them there. But that's not the point. I could care less if you buy from our estore. We're the manufacturer! We get the sale of Aprilaire product regardless of where you buy it. Just go there to see the pictures.  Then you'll know what the real deal looks like. Then. if you want to shop around, you can get them cheaper on other websites or from your local dealer.

And at least you'll know what you're getting for your dollar.

Do you have a programmable thermostat?

Monday, February 1, 2010 by Justin Randall
Having a programmable thermostat installed in your home is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to save energy and save money.

Some estimates predict that a programmable thermostat can save you up to 30% on your monthly energy bills.  The idea behind a programmable thermostat is that you’re only heating or cooling your home when it needs to be.  When you’re gone for the day at work, or sleeping you set temperature higher or lower so you’re not wasting energy conditioning an empty house.  You then set it so when you return or wake up your house is comfortable.

Aprilaire’s newest programmable thermostat, the 8400 series, offers additional benefits.  It has the ability to report the outdoor temperature as well as cycle your HVAC fan for air cleaning.

The best part about a programmable thermostat is that once you have it set up for your needs you really never have to mess around with it.  You can set it and forget it and you will save energy automatically.

Aprilaire Dealers Provide the Best Solutions

Tuesday, January 26, 2010 by Dennie Plomedahl

We received a question from Ancha:

"HI, I moved to a new house, my Aprilaire 760 humidifier works, but makes sound (I mean, when it works, the sound is really uncomfortable upstairs). Is it supposed to work like this?  I mean, I will buy a new unit and install, but are humidifiers supposed to make so much noise? Or can I fix this noise in the existing unit?  Thank you for reply"

Aprilaire response
The Model 760 is a fan-powered humidifier, meaning that there is an on-board fan that draws air across the evaporator water panel to achieve maximum humidification.  Fans do create sound, however, the sound is generally not audible over the blower of your HVAC system.  It can be noticeable if you have a variable speed HVAC blower, and you are operating on low speed while humidifying.  Even then, however, it should not be an "uncomfortable" sound.

That said, it sounds like the fan motor in the humidifier may need some attention.  Please contact your local Aprilaire dealer, who can diagnose the problem and offer you the best solution.

Thank you for your question and thanks for choosing Aprilaire!

H1N1 and Air Cleaning

Tuesday, January 12, 2010 by Tom Ruse
I am amending my previous post about trapping flu virus.

Trapping Flu Virus with Air Cleaners

Can a high efficiency air cleaner safeguard my house against the flu?

The real answer is IT CAN HELP! Our Aprilaire Model 5000 Electronic Air Cleaner DOES trap airborne particles down to 1 micron in size; well within the range of the size of flu viruses.  Here's how:

If a virus attaches itself to a piece of airborne dust,  and when your system blower operates, if that dust is blown through your return air ducts to the air cleaner filter, the Model 5000 will permanently trap 98% of those particles and they will not re-enter your living space.

In that way, the air cleaner helps control and reduce the spread of the virus. A virus that someone leaves on a hard surface may never be airborne so the Aprilaire air cleaner cannot help that---- NO air cleaner can!

Be sure you take all the precautions that the pros tell you about the spread of the flu.
