Consumer question:
We have two separate Lennox Heat Pump units in our home -- one with a 2200 & the other with a 2400 Aprilaire Air Cleaner. I have been considering upgrading these with the 1213 & 1413 kits to use the new 213 & 413 media. However, one unit is installed with the Air Cleaner in a vertical position. Your video and the various sites I have researched only show the replacement in a horizontal air cleaner.
Can either of these new media (213 & 413) be used in either a vertical or horizontal position? The Upgrade kit seems straightforward enough, but will the media drop or sag when installed in the vertical position?
I like the idea of upgrading to more efficient media, but if it won't work in the vertical setup we have, I'll just have to stock up on the old 201's or 401's.
Aprilaires' response:
Yes, you may use the upgrade kit in the vertical or horizontal positions. It will work fine either way. Even if in the horizontal position where gravity may be pulling the filter downward, there are support pieces for hold the frame in place that will not allow the filter to hang down sideways.
Consumer question:
I was reading the most recent CR evaluation on air cleaners and they warn against ozone generation by some cleaners. There was no mention of ozone in your FAQ. How much ozone does the aprilaire 5000 produce?
Aprilaires' response:
Aprilaire shares our customer’s concerns about ozone, and wants to reassure you that our Model 5000 Whole Home Electronic Air Cleaner is not designed to produce a significant amount ozone.
Ozone is produced as a result of many factors, some are man-made and some originate from nature. On any given day in the US, outdoor levels can be as high as 150 ppb. More polluted areas typically have higher outdoor ozone levels because there is a greater concentration of the components that create ground level ozone.
Levels of ozone inside our homes typically range from 10 to 70 percent of the level found outdoors, primarily depending on whether windows and doors are left open. (ref. “Ozone Decay Rates in Residences”, Harvard School of Public Health, Environmental Science and Engineering Program). The reason indoor levels are lower than outdoor levels is because ozone readily reacts with other gases and surfaces.
As a manufacturer we look to government organizations to set the standards as which to develop and produce products by. As such, we offer an air cleaner that produces 2 ppb, well below the established FDA standard of 50 ppb for medical devices and the UL standard to evaluate products for consumer safety.
The high voltage power supply contained in this (and any other) electronic air cleaner produces ozone only as a byproduct of operation; the small amount of ozone generated dissipates by the time clean air filters out and into your home. In addition, the Model 5000 removes particles from the air that have proven by research to be harmful to humans.
There are a select group of people who are sensitive to ozone. For these people, we recommend using the Aprilaire High Efficiency air cleaners Model 4200 or 4400. For everyone else, the Aprilaire Model 5000 is the best air cleaner for your home.

Consumer question:
I have an aprilaire 2250 unit installed in my ceiling, I want to change the filter and now see that you offer an upgrade kit for the 2200/2120 - I assume that I cannot upgrade my 2250 thought I would double check before I purchase filter.
Aprilaires' response:
That is a true statement... you cannot upgrade the 2250 air cleaner. The other models that are listed for the upgrade are designed to have the filter 'slide' out like in a dresser drawer. On the 2250, you need to pull the inner frame straight up and out.
The upgrade is designed to slide out the side, so we can not use that on the 2250, and we have not created an upgrade for that model as of yet.
Consumer question:
I have the aprilare old type furnace filter with plastic inserts. Do you have anything new that will replace the plastic inserts, I ordered from you a few years ago for a 2200 stlye 201 and it would not fit the old box, any up dates on a new filter
Aprilaires' response:
To be sure we would have to know the model number of your air cleaner. The number will be located on the access door. If your unit is an Electronic Air Cleaner Model 5000, unfortunately we do not have a replacement upgrade for the plastic pleat spacers.
If your unit is the 2200 or the 2400, we would then recommend using the newly designed upgrade kit. The 2200 Air Cleaner would use the part number 1213 and the 2400 Air Cleaner would use the part number 1413 upgrade kit. The kit includes, 1 newly designed filter that is self pleating. This would eliminate the use of the plastic combs. Also, the kit comes with a new metal support frame that would eliminate the use of the white plastic housing. These kits are much easier to install and less time consuming. The upgrade kits will fit into units that were installed after 1985.
Consumer question:
We are building a new home and the HVAC contractor has recommended Aprilaire 5000 as a possible air cleaner because I have allergies. We have had an electronic air cleaner for many years in our current home and have been pleased with it. Newer homes are designed and built tighter, leading to a concern that small amount of ozone which most electronic air cleaners emit is potentially harmful to our health. The latest issue of Consumer Reports of September, 2010, declined to rate electronic air cleaners for that reason.

Consumer question:
I am inquiring about pricing and also units. Is there a whole house humidifier/dehumidifier/air filter all in one? Or is is necessary to purchase the units separately? My home is 2 years old (new construction) and is energy efficient. I have approximately 1800sq ft. What is the approximate cost to have humidifier/dehumidfier/air filter?
Aprilaires' response:
Unfortunately we do not offer any type of price. We do not sell our units on a direct basis. We recommend contacting at least two or three different contractors in your area to compare pricing. Each contractor is responsible for their own pricing structure for units, labor fees and service calls. As always, when having an Aprilaire unit installed in your home, we recommend contacting one of the preferred dealers listed on our website
www.aprilaire.com. Our dealer locator is listed on the top right corner of the homepage.
Also, we do not have one unit that would filter the air, dehumidify and humidify. They are all three separate units. Please review the consumer literature regarding our
Air Cleaners,
Humidifiers and
Dehumidifiers. Please contact our Customer Service Department if we may be of further assistance.
Consumer question:
Where are your filters made?
Aprilaires' response:
Thank you for contacting us. Our filters are made in the USA. Please contact our Customer Service Department if we may be of further assistance.
Consumer question:
I moved into a house with a Aprilaire electronic air cleaner model 5000. Which air filters do I replace each year? It looks like there are 2. Could you give me the order numbers.
Aprilaires' response:
There really is only one filter that you would replace every year. It is the paper type filter that is accordion shaped. There are six comb looking pleat spacers that hold this filter into the inner housing. It is a filter #501.
Typically this is replaced once per year. When you do replace this filter, you can wipe down the ionizing wires and the metal filter. Some people call that the 'pre-filter', but it is a control electrode. Just assisting in the electronic make up of the air cleaner. Although, it does help catch items from the air, like pet hair for example.
Consumer question:
The water feed line to the filter is currently malfunctioning. Will I cause any damage to my HVAC system if I remove the filter and allow air to flow though the unit without being humidified?
Aprilaires' response:
The model 560 Aprilaire humidifier can be utilized without the use of the water panel/filter without causing any harm to the HVAC equipment. We do recommend shutting off the water supply to the humidifier in this situation to eliminate the chance of any water being dispersed into the humidifier. In the event that the water panel is not installed in the humidifier the option for the humidifier to operate should be eliminated until the water panel is placed back in the unit. We would be happy to further assist you with any questions or concerns relating to the operation of your model 560 humidifier. If there are any questions please contact us at your earliest convenience.
Consumer question:
All the pictures on the web-site show the bypass humidifiers with the inlet
on the left side. Can these be modified so the inlet is on the right side?
Aprilaires' response:
A bypass humidifier gets its air movement through the Water Panel® by the differential pressure between the supply (hot air) plenum and the return (cold air) duct. The supply plenum is under positive pressure and the return duct is under negative pressure.
One of the advantages of a bypass humidifier is that it can be installed either on the supply plenum or on the return duct with equal effectiveness. No matter which duct the unit is mounted on, the airflow always goes from the supply to the return through the humidifier.
A bypass humidifier will also have no adverse effect on any component in the furnace, air cleaner or filter. Aprilaire® Humidifiers put “water vapor” into the air, not raw water. This is nature's way of getting relative humidity into the air.
Consumer question:
Where would I find a replacement water vapor evaporator for the model 760?
Aprilaires' response:
The water panel that you would be looking to replace in your 760 humidifier is the number 35. Please use the
dealer locator on our consumer website to locate local dealers who we would check first to see about purchasing the #35 water panel for your humidifier. We recommend replacing the filter once a year either at the beginning of the heating season or at the end.
If you run into any difficulty in purchasing the water panel from your local dealers, you could purchase the filter from our website: https://estore.aprilaire.com/catalog/humidifiers/water-panels/253

Consumer question:
I have an Aprilaire model 2210 air cleaner. I am looking fo a replacement filter. The filter itself and the book that came with it says to replace with model 213. Your website shows the replacement as model 210. I want to make sure I order the correct filter.
Aprilaires' response:
There are two options available to you regarding replacement filters for this particular air cleaner. This particular air cleaner can utilize either the 210 or the 213 media filter for replacement. The replacement filter 213 is a more effective filter at removing the smaller particles from the air. This particular filter is a MERV 13 filter that has a the capability of capturing bacteria and virus sized particles. The replacement filter 210 is still a very effective filter but has slightly less efficient than the replacement filter 213. The replacement filter 210 has a MERV rating of 10 that allows it to captures particles effectively at a 1 micron in size. This type of particle is very small and can not be seen with the naked eye. Again either of these filters are compatible with the model 2210 and are both very effective when be used within the air cleaner. We would be happy to further assist you with any questions relating to your media air cleaner. If there are any further questions please contact us at your earliest convenience.
Consumer question:
Where can I purchase the RP Super Filter Coat Adhesive? I stopped in at
Lowe's and they do not have it.
Aprilaires' response:
To purchase the Super Filter Coat, you do not want to look at home improvement or hardware stores. We do not sell them at those locations.
The best way to purchase this is to go to our online store: estore.aprilaire.com and order from there. The ten ounce spray bottle is #412.
The other choice you have is to call us at 800-334-6011 and order over the phone.
Consumer question:
I would like to know how much is costs for a new filter for an Aprilaire 700M all home humidifier? During installation last October I was told that all I need to do is replace the filter yearly. Is that correct?
Aprilaires' response:
In order to get the greatest humidification from our humidifier for your home you would need to replace the filter yearly. Our filters are coated with non-toxic particles that slows the water flow through the filter, thus allowing the water to be added as humidity to the air flowing through the humidifier. The particles do eventually get flushed down the drain and thus with less resistence the water flow increases through the filter causing less humidification through the filter.
You can purchase the replacement part #35 through a local dealer or directly from Aprilaire, and you can find that pricing on the website that I provided:
https://estore.aprilaire.com/catalog/humidifiers/model-700-series-parts/253
Consumer question:
I wish to install a gauge to measure the pressure drop across the P/N 201 filter in order to know when to replace it. What is the recommended pressure in inches of water that I should allow before I replace the filter?
Aprilaires' response:
We typically recommend changing the 201 filter annually if you operate the furnace fan 24/7. We have attached the spec sheet on the model 2200 for your use. The resistance at change out can vary based on the HVAC equipment manufacturers design. Our suggestion would be to change the 201 when the resistance hits .35" w.c..
Please review the specifications for further details.
Consumer question:
I have a spacegard 2000 in my home. A while ago when i had a heater guy do heater maint. he did not have the right filter so he put in a skinny one. I mistakenly threw out that cage thing that went around the correct filter. I see the upgrade kit but am unsure if it will work as mine may be older.
Aprilaires' response:
In order to determine if your air cleaner will work with the new upgrade you will need to check the air cleaner for a guide rail on the top and bottom of the air cleaner box. If you do not have this rail, you will simply notice that there is nothing on the top and bottom of the air cleaner but flat sheet metal. If there is not a rail in your unit, you will not be able to use this kit because the new bracket needs it to stay in place.
Consumer question:
I have an Air Cleaner model 5000 and was replacing my electronic air cleaner replacement media and saw that one of the Ionizer wires was snapped, much like a broken guitar string. If the unit is in the off position because I didn't want the unit on with a broken Ionizer wire, does the model 5000 still act as the filter for my system?
Aprilaires' response:
Yes, even without the electronic capabilities, your air cleaner will still clean the air for you.
As long as there is a filter in the 'air way', you are filtering your air. You will not have the added benefits of the electronic air cleaner, but it will still clean your air.
You do not mention how old the unit is..... If you had it installed anytime after October of 2006, there is a parts warranty of five years on that. You can get the new wire for free.
Consumer question:
In your literature online you mention that it is possible to upgrade an air
cleaner if it is the 2200 model built after 1985. I'm unsure of the creation
date of my current machine, but the door and outer casing is the robin egg blue
color. Is there a way to upgrade if you have this model/version or am I unable
to upgrade and get a more efficient filter?
Aprilaires' response:
Unfortunately, your air cleaner is too old for the conventional upgrade kit. The Robin Egg blue color signifies that the date is pre-85.
If you have seen the video for our upgrade kit, you will see that the kits uses a guide rail to position itself inside the unit. The Pre-85 units did not have this guide rail. As an alternative, some dealers have simply screwed through the sheet metal to hold it this unit.
Otherwise your only option would be to stick with the system you are currently using.
Consumer question:
Has anyone used a filter to clean air coming through a window? I live in a very smokey area and would like to remove most of it to enjoy the cool outside air rather than air condition.
Aprilaires' response:
We do not offer such a device that would allow you to use your window A/C directly. We do offer a portable unit that can be placed in our home that may help with your needs.
Here is a brochure that will allow you to learn a little more about this unit and it benefits. If you are interested, we recommend calling a dealer in your local area for price and availability.
Consumer question:
Thinking of ordering the upgrade for model 2400. Your video shows all units upright; however, mine is on its side, underneath the unit. Will this upgrade still work correctly?
Aprilaires' response:
Yes, you can install this horizontally without any issues. With this upgrade kit their are band that hold the filter upright. Your question is a common and many have installed the kit horizontally with out any problems.
